The best time to go to the Maldives is between December and April when the monsoon season has ended. • Dharavandhoo Island

    Dharavandhoo Island

Dharavandhoo Island is located in Baa Atoll 110 km north of Male. With a population of about 800 people, the island has its own airport.

Check: Budget packages to local islands

This island is surrounded by clear waters known as Dharavandhoo Thila and Hanifaru Bay; which are famous amongst divers around the world, for it is a sanctuary for a variety of marine life, including manta rays and whale sharks.

    dharavandhoo-beach-sunset

    Things to do in Dharavandhoo

    Beach and house reef

The island itself is divided into two parts: a domestic airport and a village. The village occupies almost half of the island. It’s not large, but well-managed. There are litter bins on the streets. It’s a rare thing for local islands.

Bikini beach is quite long and occupies almost the whole northern part of the island. The beach has sunbeds, hammocks, swings, and umbrellas. During the off-season (May to November), the ocean brings a lot of garbage, which does not always have time to clean up. So be prepared for this.

The private beach area is marked by a small sign, but it is not enclosed.

Water entry is not very convenient. There are a lot of dead corals, but you can find a sandy place where you can lie and have a rest.

House coral reef stretches over the whole beach line, but it is not as interesting as the one on Rasdhoo or Omadhoo, it is more like the one on Dhiffushi. You need to swim 40-50 meters to reach its edge. The water is crystal-clear. The visibility is 30-40 m!

Expect to see schools of fish, rays, turtles, and reef sharks.

So it makes sense to go on snorkeling trips. For example, you can visit Turtle Garden (near Soneva Fushi resort). There you can see 5-7 turtles at a time.

    hanifaru-bay-manta

    Hanifaru Bay

A key area of UNESCO’s biosphere reserve, Hanifaru Bay (Vandhumaafaru Adi) is a huge elongated coral reef and a marine conservation area in the Maldives surrounded by white sands, 5 minutes by boat to the east of Dharavandhoo.

Nowadays Hanifaru Bay is considered to be the world’s largest manta ray feeding station. For many years Hanifaru has been known to local fishermen who used to hunt the whale sharks that also frequent this site. More recently the site is frequented by scuba divers; the first dive operators ventured up into Baa Atoll in the mid-1990s.

Realizing that the bay had turned into something of a circus and the situation would affect the sustainability of the area, a proactive stance was taken and the bay was declared a Marine Protected site in 2009 by the Maldives government, in recognition of its importance in the ecosystem. In 2011 it was also declared a core-protected area within the newly designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve that encompasses the entirety of Baa Atoll.

Tourists visit this place just to see this area of outstanding natural beauty. But why? From May till November in Hanifaru Bay you can see 100-200 manta rays! I managed to see 70 manta rays. Unforgettable feelings!

    hanifaru-bay-mantas

No diving is allowed there, only snorkeling. The daily limit is 5 boats and no more than 80 people at any given time

It’s vital to remember that you must not touch them. They are very friendly and if they wish, they will touch you themselves.

The best time to visit Hanifaru Bay is from June to November. During these months the southwest monsoon causes massive built of plankton drawing hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks into the bay. The best time to visit this preserved area is full moon days. It is during this time when tides are high and there is more feed for manta rays.

The excursion lasts 40-50 min (you are not permitted to stay longer by authorities). But it is worth it. You’ll have an unforgettable experience!

    sandbank trip

    Sandbank visiting near Dharavandhoo

Visit a virgin island, a stretch of sand in the sky for the epitome of romantic picnics. Sandbank excursions in the Maldives will be the idyllic escapade for those seeking adventures in the Maldives to indulge in the wonderful climate of sun, sea, and sand. Drinks are inclusive, lunch is for an extra price.

Picnic islands. Near Kendhoo, there is a chain of 4 uninhabited islands that are possible to visit as well. They have an amazing untouched house reef with a lot of fish. They are not popular among other island resorts, so there is a high chance you will be the only one out there.

An uninhabited island Mendhoo is operated & managed by the Biosphere Reserve Maldives Environment Protection by UNESCO. It’s possible to arrange day packages to this beautiful island where you will get to enjoy the white sandy beaches surrounded by crystal clear water.

    night fishing

    Night fishing

Maldivians have been fishing for millennia and they have become extremely good at it! With a simple hook and line, enjoy this ancient pastime and maybe even catch yourself some dinner! Guests often return to the hotel with a juicy snapper or mackerel in tow.

This is definitely a night to remember full of scenes and memories. Bait your hook, drop your line direct from a ‘Dhoni’ to the reef edge & hope for a fish as you watch the spectacular colors of sunset & ocean waves lap the surrounding islands. The fish caught by you will be cooked for a dinner at the same night.

    dharavandhoo snorkeling

    Snorkeling safari near Dharavandhoo

There are countless incredible snorkeling sites near Dharavandhoo. Here, you’ll be able to observe an abundance of aquatic life, ranging from tiny shrimps to titanic manta rays.

Coral Garden. The Coral Garden Reef with narrow reef flats with lots of channels and wide lagoons is the best for snorkeling. As the water gets deeper, the differences in the coral and other types of marine life are clearly visible.

Turtle Reef. Soneva Fushi resort is located near Dharavandhoo. This place is inhabited by turtles. It is possible to see 5-7 turtles there. I’d definitely visit it!

    dharavandhoo dolphins

    Dolphin Cruise

Dolphins are a species that is a pleasure to behold; their seeming lust for life, energy, and playfulness is delightful. In the Maldives, we are lucky to be surrounded by these smartest creatures. The most common species is the spinner dolphin, which can gather into groups of up to  500.

Head into the feeding grounds of Maldivian dolphins. Heart-warming interactions as they tail your vessel and leap above the waves. Stunningly graceful, strikingly human.

    dharavandhoo-dive-center

    Scuba diving near Dharavandhoo

The Maldives is one of the most sought-after dive destinations and living in Baa atoll will amaze you. There are plenty of dive sites nearby where you can see mantas, whale sharks (rare), hammerheads (very rare, it’s better to go to Rasdhoo) or simply drift through the amazing coral formations viewing the marine life as you pass the nooks and crannies of the reef.

    Resort day visit near Dharavandhoo

There are many resorts in Baa Atoll, which are open to visitors. Among them are:

    — Kihaad Maldives;

    — Amila Fushi resort;

    — Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu;

    Finolhu Baa Atoll;

    — Royal Island resort.

Prices differ, but the average one is $80-200 per person. You can ask the staff in your guesthouse to help you.

    Island Hopping

Dharavandhoo is an incredible example of Maldivian island living. The island is surrounded by other beautiful local communities. Wander the streets of these inhabited islands and note the subtle differences between them. Meet the famed fishermen of Dhonfan or meander the quiet streets of Maalhos. Visit the atoll’s capital of Eydhafushi and observe the most populated island in Baa Atoll.

    Other activities on Dharavandhoo

Water sports. A range of watersports from Jet SKis to Banana Boats will provide plenty of thrills and excitement for the more action-oriented!

Big game fishing. If you are a bit more into fishing than merely tossing a line overboard and you feel like you want to go for a bigger prize, then big game fishing is for you.

    dharavandhoo-shop

    Dharavandhoo Infrastructure

The economy is mainly based on tourism-related activities, fishery, and agriculture, though most of the educated run their own businesses or are employed with work in Male (the capital city of Maldives).

Dharavandhoo is a local hab for visitors surrounded by local islands, so it’s considerably developed. There are 4 cafes on the island, and some gift shops (a lot of resorts are located nearby).

The island has its own health center, two football grounds, ATM, a bank office, mobile operator offices, a pharmacy, and two dive centers.

Two companies Maldivian and FlyMe fly to Daravandhoo. The total number of flights per day is 8-9, and prices from 85 USD per person, one way. Conveniently, you can fly away at almost any time, but a little bit expensive.

    dharavandhoo-caffee

    Where to eat on Dharavandhoo

There are several cafes on the island, as well as restaurants and bars in the hotels. Food on offer is a mix of traditional and modern cuisine, where the menu is designed with an emphasis on taste, variety, and quality of ingredients.

No alcohol is allowed in Dharavandhoo. To drink some beer or wine you have to take a resort day trip.

Honey Bunny. The food is delicious, with great local-style curry and affordable prices.

The Mini Bunny. Local place with a great variety of local and continental food. The mango juice is great and the prices are reasonable.

Loamaafaanu Restaurant. The in-house restaurant of Aveyla Manta Village hotel. A large selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options.

Layers Cafe & Bakers. A nice cozy place to chill out with friends. Homemade bread is the best.

    Where to stay on Dharavandhoo

You can choose one of the local hotels or guest houses, but I advise Kihaa Beach, and that’s why.

    • Super friendly staff;
    • #1 hotel in Dharavandhoo based on Tripadvisor reviews;
    • An amazing in-house chef that can cook a great variety of local and continental cuisine;

  • Goidhoo Travel Guide

    Goidhoo Travel Guide

Goidhoo is a local island in Baa Atoll. The island is 100 km northwest of Malé. Goidhoo is a rather large island, 2.2 x 1.8 km. And there is a freshwater lake – very rare for local islands in the Maldives. The whole atoll is separated from Baa Atoll by a 15km wide channel.

Check: Budget tours to local islands

From the island’s history it’s known that in the 19th century an African settled here, who worked for many years in the palace of the Sultan in Malé, was officially freed from slavery by the King of Maldives. After receiving freedom, a house and a well were built for her on Goidhoo. This woman was called Salaam, and today there are some families on the island that are descendants of their African ancestors.

    goidhoo beach

    Things to do in Goidhoo

    Bikini beach and house reef

Bikini beach is located in the south part of Goidhoo, around 15 mins of walking through jungles and farm fields. So you can feel how islanders are living in remote islands.

The main issue in Goidhoo is the surrounded island seaweed. So you can swim only in the Bikini Beach area.

House reef is accessible from a speedboat only as it’s too shallow near Goidhoo. Another option is Rocky Beach, but the entrance is full of dead corals and rocks. So shoes are a must-have.

    goidhoo lake

    Freshwater Lakes

There are two mangrove lakes with freshwater to explore. There are very shallow so you can just walk. It’s very rare to see in Maldives freshwater lakes as there are no rivers or mountains to fill them with water.

Goidhoo is a farmer’s island with a lot of vegetable and fruit farms. It’s not as famous as Thoddoo, but you can take a walking trip as well.

They have a harbor to anchor speedboats and large fishing boats. From this island, you can go to Fehendhoo, Fulhadhoo, and take a scheduled speedboat to Male.

Two mosques (including Old Friday Mosque), a pharmacy, a few local shops, four cafes can be found there.

Local guest houses are provided with local and continental food. Places to eat outside are:

  • Feridhoo Travel Guide

    Feridhoo Travel Guide

Feridhoo is a local island in the Maldives, located 88 km west from the capital Male. It belongs to Alif Alif Atoll and has a population of 700 people.

Check: Budget packages to local islands

In centuries past, two male African slaves who had been bought by the kings on their Hajj trips to Mecca were formally released from slavery and were settled on this island. One of them was called Sangoru. He had been working for years at the palace in Malé before the ailing king released him in order to gain merit in the afterlife.

The freeing of slaves before the death of the owner was traditionally a common practice among the very high nobility in the Maldives. Now there are many families on Feridhoo and in neighboring Maalhos who can trace their descendency to those two African ancestors.

The island is still very wild with an almost untouched beach and vegetation that occupies 2/3 of the island.

    Things to do on Feridhoo

    Bikini beach

The white sandy beaches with their crystal clear waters are one of the features that make Feridhoo a unique island. Feridhoo has beautiful beaches, with a total length of around 1km! Here you can experience serenity at its best. There are umbrellas and sunbeds on the beach. Not many tourists are coming to Feridhoo, so you’ll have enough space for privacy.

Feridhoo has one of the best bikini beaches among inhabited islands.

    Feridhoo mantas

    Snorkeling

The reefs all over the Maldives are inhabited by various kinds of aquatic flora and fauna and are great for a relaxing day watching fish on the reef.

Looking for the BEST alive coral reef? Welcome to Feridhoo. This is the only inhabited island (at least in Central Atolls) with 80% living corals. Be ready to spend days exploring the house reef as it’s extremely large.

Reef fish, jackfish patrolling the reef, eagle rays, and occasional, but not unusual, sightings of white tip reef sharks and turtles make the house reef of Feridhoo a perfect site for first-timers. But comparing to Ukulhas, Rasdhoo or Omadhoo – there is very few schools of fishes and almost no animals.

You can join manta ray snorkeling and safari snorkeling to see much more as well.

    Feridhoo ocean view

    Scuba diving

There is only one dive center on the island – Noohiri. Their service includes not only diving but snorkeling and even sailing.

The location of the island allows us to offer you the most beautiful and famous diving spots; Most dives will be in “thila” and “kandu”.

There is the famous “Maalhos Thila” near Feridhoo, considered by many one of the most beautiful diving spots in the area. Many Manta Points are reachable in a short time (including for snorkeling as well.

From the beach of Feridhoo, you can do a discover scuba dive along the island’s house reef; a depth of 8-12 meters. This dive site is perfect for those who want to try a first-time underwater experience.

There are 16 dive points nearby that are reachable by dhoni for experienced divers.

    Feridhoo beach

    Night fishing

Fishing is another great activity if you want to experience traditional fishing on local Dhoni Boats, game fishing, and spend time with the locals exploring uninhabited Islands. You can even bring your catch back and ask the hotel’s chef to cook it for you as a barbeque dinner.

    Other activities

Sandbank visiting. Enjoy the beauty of the white sands, let the sun kiss your skin, BBQ some, snorkel through the reef, and have a barbecue lunch.

Octopus hunting. Octopus hunting is a very popular pastime among Maldivians for it’s an adventure as well as the octopus meat which is a highly valued delicacy.

Dolphin safari. Set out in an afternoon out to the sea on this activity to watch a group of dolphins cruising through the ocean.

    Feridhoo jetty

    Feridhoo Infrastructure

There is a school, a mosque, a local medical center, and a football field. You can walk around local grocery shops, cafes, and souvenir shops in the island. The whole tour to explore the island will take no more than 40 minutes.

In Maldives inhabited islands, alcohol is prohibited and women’s clothing should cover shoulders and legs in areas not dedicated to tourism. It’s not a very strict rule, but it’s better to respect local laws. On tourists, a beach bikini is allowed.

    Where to eat on Feridhoo

Each guesthouse provides Maldivian/Continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner on-demand and unlimited bottled drinking water free of charge. Tea and coffee are available the whole day and for free as well. As for drinks expect fresh juices made of e.g. mango, papaya, or passion fruit (surcharge)

    Local restaurants on Feridhoo:

Fun Relish. Delicious smoothies and incredible grilled fish. Friendly cook and cozy place with local taste. Calm and spacious environment. This is the only restaurant in Feridhoo.

N6 Beach Cafe. It’s been always a remarkable dining place on Feridhoo.

TOP 10 Dive Sites in the Maldives

The Maldives abound with a variety of diving sites suitable for any level of experience, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver. Considering that the Maldives is a region of about 1200 islands, imagine how many places for diving you can choose from. So what is the way to find out the best site where you can meet all the sea creatures inhabiting these islands? Here is a list of TOP dive sites around the Maldives that you should visit.

top dive sites in maldives fotheyo

    Fotteyo

    Location: Vaavu Atoll
    Current: might be strong
    Marine life: great variety

First that you should know is the size of Fotteyo. To explore it properly you need to have at least 3 dives! It is on my list of the top three best sites in the Maldives. The site is located in the eastern part of the atoll and mostly you can reach it only from a liveaboard boat because it’s rather remote. The great variety of the marine means you can see here shoals of various fish, sharks, corals, turtles, and even hammerhead sharks. In the morning or the evening, you can also see a flock of dolphins crossing the canal. Diving is recommended in the morning. This site is only good for experienced divers.

    Kuda Rah Thila

    Location: South Ari Atoll
    Current: Can be strong
    Marine life: Rich diversity

It’s been a marine protected reef since 1995 and is one of the most famous reefs in the Maldives. Only 10 mins from Dhigurah and a very exciting dive with thousands of blue stripe snappers often being hunted by sharks, tunas, giant trevallies, and jacks. Some very beautiful soft corals with a large swim thru at one end. Kudarah Thila is made of the main reef that has shallower tops on each side, and a tunnel crossing the deeper coral ridge on its western side. As the site is very famous, there might already be divers here when you arrive. One of the top dive sites in Maldives!

    Rasdhoo Channel

    Location: North Ari Atoll
Current: Medium to Strong – can be very strong
    Marine life: Rich diversity

Another great dive site for experienced divers with Deep Dive Training or Advanced level because of the negative entry and the depth! All thilas are already well-colonized on the atoll drop-off edge at a depth between 20 to 25 meters between Kuramathi and Rasdhoo island. On the sandy bottom between the thilas, look for stingrays or white-tip reef sharks. While crossing the channel, almost anything is possible like grey reef sharks, eagle rays, napoleon, dog-tooth tunas, and many more. On some very lucky days, you may see silver-tip reef sharks! However, this dive can be done only when the current runs into the Atoll!

You can see up to 10 turtles on this site!

top dive sites in maldives Alimatha Pier

    Alimatha Pier

    Location: Vaavu Atoll
    Current: Might be strong
    Marine life: Nurse sharks

It is a truly unforgettable top dive sites Maldives. A night diving with a great number of nurse sharks near Alimatha resort. There’re actually plenty of good sites near this island. Sometimes you can meet up to 50-60 sharks here! But where do they come from? It is not a big deal but they are being fed here. That’s why stingrays, blacktip sharks, and jacks come to the site. As a result, this site is very popular with divers. But for the strong current, you should be very careful on the bottom.

    Madivaru Corner

    Location: North Ari Atoll
Current: Medium to Strong – can be very strong
    Marine life: Rich diversity

A highlight in the Rasdhoo for many reasons. This reef is located just in front of the island Madivaru and has some superb overhangs between 26 to 30 meters before a breathtaking drop-off. The real beauty of the dive will be when the current runs along the reef on the right shoulder and into the Atoll. Because with this current you don’t have to swim much because most of the time on your dive you just hold onto some dead coral on the drop-off around 18 meters where the breathtaking show begins. Everybody can find here almost anything they are looking for, from macro to big pelagic species like grey reef sharks, white-tip reef sharks, eagle rays, napoleon wrasse, shoals of barracuda, jackfish and even giant travelers and dog-tooth tunas chasing baitfish etc. Always worth a dive. Anything is possible, however, the current can be medium to very strong.

    Hammerhead Shark Point

    Location: North Ari Atoll
Current: Medium to Strong – can be very strong
    Marine life: Hammerhead sharks

Another highlight, an early morning diving to meet the famous Scalloped Hammerhead shark which can only be seen in a few places in the Maldives. A blue-water dive with no reference. In other words, no reef or bottom where the blue plankton let you think you are flying among the stars. Even without sharks an unforgettable experience. Only for experienced divers with Deep Dive Training or Advanced level, of course, good buoyancy control is required! NITROX highly recommended.

    Kuredhdhoo Kandu

    Location: Lhaviany Atoll
    Current: Might be strong
    Marine life: Rich diversity

Kuredhdhoo Kandu or Kuredu Express is one of the most popular places to dive in this atoll. It is located to the east of Kuredu Resort. You can see a great variety of sharks at a depth of 30 meters. It is also recommended to use a hook to enjoy marine life near you.

    Banana reef

    Location: North Male Atoll
    Current: Not very strong
    Marine life: Rich diversity

This one is probably the most popular site in the Maldives. It is located between Hulhumale and Sheraton Full moon resort. It is characterized by a great number of caves, big shoals of fish, soft and hard corals. The shoals of bannerfish which can include up to 1000 fish are really impressive! Apart from this, you can meet groupers, snappers, barracuda sharks, gigantic squirrelfish, oriental sweetlips, soldierfish, and grubfish. The site is available anytime and is best for beginners.

    Tiger Shark Point

    Location: Fuvahmulah Atoll
    Current: Can be very strong
    Marine life: Tiger sharks

One one the main feature which makes Fuvahmulah incredibly attractive for the world diving community are Tiger Sharks. Tiger Sharks have surrounded the island cleaning the waste daily produced by the fish market. Sharks are not aggressive, no case of a shark attack was registered. Diving with the tiger sharks is available every day and doesn’t depend on the current, seasons, time, and weather conditions. Experienced dive guides lead this dive following all necessary safety rules requirements. One of the best destinations for Tiger Sharks. 100% guarantee every day.

    Kandooma Thila

    Location: South Male Atoll
    Current: Can be strong
    Marine life: Rich diversity

This thila is located to the north of Holiday Inn Kandooma resort. It’s at the depth of 12 m on the bottom of the canal. The eastern and northern parts are the most interesting for divers. You can meet schools of fish, mantas, and sharks. The latter are mostly seen during the incoming current in the north part. At this time is it recommended to stay with a hook near the Corner to watching grey sharks. This site is available anytime but is only recommended to experienced divers.

  • Top 10 budget water villas in Maldives

Top 10 budget water villas in Maldives

Even the most budget water villas in the Maldives are not as cheap as they might seem. The price starts at $ 300 per night (in June and July it can even be lower due to discounts), half board (breakfast and dinner), or full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). On average, the cost is 40% higher than the beach villa. But you get a unique opportunity to spend your vacation over a crystal clear lagoon with a private entrance to the water.

I’ve created a list of the most budget water villas in the Maldives to simplify your choice.

It would be best if you also considered that the transfer is paid separately and is not included in the villa cost. Therefore, the total cost will increase.

    embudu budget water villa

    1. Embudu Village

    Embudu Village on the map

Price Range: 350 – 430 USD/night/villa with full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)

Transfer: 10 min by speed boat, cost –  88 USD/person, round trip.

Embudu Village is a small resort and located just 10 km from the Airport. This resort is one of the most affordable in the Maldives in terms of price/quality because, without overpayments, you get breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the package. During high season, from Nov to Apr, it isn’t easy to find a free villa because they are all sold out at least 2-3 months before arrival. Therefore, if you are looking for a water villa, I recommend booking in advance. On the island, there are only 14 water villas located in two blocks on the water. This is one of the cheapest ocean villas in the Maldives.

The size of this budget water villa is 42 m2.

These villas do not have a private entrance to the ocean, unlike similar villas on other islands. But there is a private terrace fenced from other rooms. The room has a glass window on the floor, so you can enjoy an underwater world without leaving your room!

The bathroom has a Jacuzzi, where you can enjoy a pleasant massage while drinking chilled wine.

The rest of the room amenities include air conditioning, hot/cold water, tea/coffee making facilities, telephone, hairdryer, minibar, flat-screen TV, safe and free wi-fi.

    Price Range: $ 310 – $ 360/night/villa with breakfast

Transfer: 30 min flight by domestic airline + 20 min by a speed boat. Cost – $ 290 / person, round trip.

Reethi Beach Resort is medium in size and one of the most affordable resorts with water villas in the Maldives. There are only 30 two-dimensional water villas on the island.

The size of the water bungalow is 61 m2.

These budget water villas in the Maldives do not have a private entrance to the sea for snorkeling. But still, you can leave your stuff on the beach and go swimming. The only problem with the resort’s water villa is that the bathrooms are in the back of the bedroom, so there is no ocean view. But there is a private terrace where you can enjoy pleasant views.

For the rest, the room amenities include air conditioning, hot/cold water, tea/coffee making facilities, telephone, hairdryer, minibar, flat-screen TV, safe and free wi-fi.

However, Reethi Beach Resort is quite an old resort (for the Maldives), and the interior requires updates compared to most new ones. Therefore, you should not expect something supernatural from a resort in this price range.

These ocean villas truly embrace the island life ofteh resort, which has a very relaxed atmosphere. The resort itself is one of the largest in the Maldives both in terms of area and number of rooms.

Villa Park Maldives has 68 budget water villas in the Maldives located above the beautiful turquoise lagoon. These exclusive rooms are spacious and furnished with Maldivian-style furniture leading to a wooden pier, creating a feeling of secluded privacy away from the rest of the island. As in the case of other cheap resorts, a water villa has to be booked at least 2-4 months in advance before arrival.  The villas are divided into blocks of two rooms, each of which has its veranda. While water villas have private access to the ocean, they are quite far from the beach. Providing a unique experience of living on the island.
