Himmafushi island is a part of Kaafu Atoll. It is located just 17 km to the north of Male. Huraa and Thulusdhoo are situated a bit farther. The size of the island is 900 m x 750 m, and just 850 people live there. Not that many. It is a typical local island, which can be walked around in 40 minutes even if you walk at a snail’s pace.
The island was extended almost double in size, but a new area hasn’t been developed yet.
Things to do in Himmafushi
Bikini beach and house reef
Bikini beach is on the island’s northern tip near some guest houses. A short strip of sand with fringed coconut trees has not yet received the official status of a tourist beach, but this is the only place on the island where you can sunbathe and swim in a bikini.
There is no house reef near Himmafushi, so you have to take a snorkeling safari trip to do this activity.

Himmafushi is a famous surfing destination in Maldives. Check below the most favorite surf points.
Jailbreak
Himmafushi home break Jailbreak is just a five-minute walk away, free to paddle out any time of day. It’s named after the fact it’s right in front of jail and until recently it was actually illegal to surf there (as the entrance was on private property), but now it’s opened! It’s a perfect right-hander with three sections. Jailbreak offers waves from intermediate surfers to advanced surfers. On a good swell, you can ride along walls and tube sections.
Sultans
Across the channel from jail this spot is for those who want something a bit bigger and challenging this is the spot and it’s certainly not one for beginners or low-end intermediates. Sultans is a fast (right-hander) wave creating two sections, the first peak mellow leading to the second. Both are perfect barrels giving a ride of around 200 m. Although usually crowded, it’s quite deep and this makes it more of a competitive surf.
Honkys
Honkys is a left-hand point break opposite of Sultans. The first peak is pretty mellow but jacks up into the second section with a height almost double the first giving a long perfect ride.
Ninjas
A slightly more mellow break (also referred to as Piddlers) Ninjas is one of the more beginner-friendly and longboard friendly waves in the area and is best surfed at 1 m and under and breaks much slower than most of the waves in the area. The break is named Ninjas because of the many Japanese surfers who like to surf it. It is accessible 20-25 minutes from Himmafushi by boat.
Cockes
One of the most famous surf breaks in the Maldives this right-hander is very similar to Jailbreaks actually, although slightly faster on the right swell. The wave’s name is due to the Coca-Cola factory nearby on the island of Thulusdhoo. So you have to hire a private speedboat to go there. Works best with winds from south and northeast.
Chickens
This wave holds swell sizes from 1m to well over 3m and provides rides up to 500m long. This is a long left-hand wave with 2 sections where you can easily get barrels on the last section of the wave. The name of this wave is due to the poultry farm that exists on the island, and not due to surfers’ reaction to high swells! It’s a 30 min ride by speedboat, near Thulusdhoo local island.
Pasta Point and Lohis
These are private surf points that are available for guests staying on Cinnamon Dhonveli and Adaaran Hudhuranfushi only.
Snorkeling safari near Himmafushi
Clear, warm water and diverse marine life make snorkeling in the Maldives one of the best places in the world. The countless reefs throughout the atolls each offer a unique experience. Some lagoons are even so close to shore that a few kicks and strokes and you’re swimming amidst the friendly fish, harmless sharks and shy rays. The reefs all over the Maldives are inhabited by various kinds of aquatic flora and fauna and are great for a relaxing day watching fish on the reef.
Night fishing
The surrounding reefs of Himmafushi are abundant with game fishes like trevallies, snappers, and groupers. But you can try line fishing and check your luck trying to catch some fish for dinner. Lulling waves and the amazing starscape of the night sky accompany you on a memorable night fishing trip. You can ask your hotel to cook it on a grill.
Scuba diving
Although scuba diving around Himmafushi isn’t as great as diving on Rasdhoo, Dhangethi, or Fulidhoo. But there are still plenty of dive sites to explore in the area and the island has a couple of well-established PADI dive centers (such as Feena Dive) that will show you the underwater world.
Other activities on Himmafushi
Dolphin cruise. The Indian Ocean around the Maldives is home to hundreds of dolphins and the local spinner dolphins are always keen for an awesome show of aerial acrobatics! But it’s not 100% guaranteed to see them it’s still a fun day cruising around the islands and perfect for those who don’t wang to get wet.
Resort day visit. It’s possible to arrange a day trip to Cinnamon Dhonveli, Paradise Island, or Adaaran Hudhuranfushi with lunch and drinks.
Sandbank trip. A unique opportunity to stay on a small piece of land in the middle of nowhere!
In fact, if you don’t want to do surfing, it’s better to go to Dhiffushi.
Himmafushi Infrastructure
There are no ATMs on the island, so make sure that you have got cash (ruffiyaas or USD). Credit cards are accepted at guest houses, but they charge a 4% fee for processing.
There are several groceries (for example, a large bottle of water costs just $1, fruit and vegetables – $0,1-$2), and gift shops available on the island. You can have a meal at two small restaurants; there you can try dishes of local cuisine.
Here are some prices on dishes at restaurants:

Lavazza coffee – $2 (coffee there is not of the best quality);
a burger/sandwich – $2,5;
noodles – $2,5 – $4;

You can also buy fish from the locals and ask to cook it at a guest house. The prices are ok, but they want to charge more from tourists rather than from locals, that’s why you should ask a menu with all the prices listed.
Where to eat on Himmafushi
Outside the guest houses, in the village there are some restaurants, if you want to know the real tastes of Maldivian cuisine, especially some of the post-dinner snacks cooked deep-fried, known as ‘khedika’.
Oevaru. Tuna, pasta with seafood, curry everything was tasty. Serves both western foods (sandwiches, burgers). Good price for good food. Could not complain very modest and friendly!
Anmadey Cafe’. Very local style cafe in Himmafushi. Good tuna fish rice. Big serving and satisfying…go for the local Maldivian dishes. Skip the western stuff. The fish and chips, and grilled tuna look rather pitiful
Sea Breeze Cafe. Another local-style cafe with Maldivian food and snacks. Management is friendly and really kind. If the place is full it’s possible that serving time gets longer.

What is the best choice to spend your perfect time in the Maldives: resort or local island?
Everyone knows that the Maldives is a paradise for privacy, with insanely beautiful views, a snow-white beach and the azure ocean. It attracts with its remoteness from the outside world and its accessibility is not for everyone.
Not everyone could afford to get holidays in this amazing corner of the planet for many years. The average cost of such a holiday began from $ 1,500 for a couple for 4 nights. Is it worth it?
Until 2008, there were no other options, so the Maldives remained a very closed resort. Only occasionally do ordinary tourists visit the local islands in search of exotic and the opportunity to plunge into the real, wild and unexplored Maldives.
But everything changed with new government and the change of laws in relation to ordinary Maldivians – they were allowed to open their own tourism business on local islands. From that moment, the era of affordable, cheap, and most importantly, quite high-quality holidays in the Maldives began.
You can argue endlessly about where it is better – a local island or resort. Therefore, all the main pros, cons and similar features of relaxation on local islands and at the resort will be described below.
Advantages of local islands
Local islands in the Maldives are the inhabited islands on which the locals live. The population of such islands is from 500 to 2500 people. Sizes: length from 500 to 2000 m, width about the same. It is not by chance that the emphasis is placed on these figures, later we will explain why.
There are about 200 inhabited islands in the Maldives. On a hundred of them, there is a tourist cluster (at least one guest house). And on about 40, the infrastructure is quite developed, including a jetty, several guest houses, cafes, and restaurants, a tourist beach, and diving centers. Consider the main advantages of such islands.
Cost of living
Of course, the main thing is the cost of living. It ranges from $ 30 to $ 150 per night, depending on the hotel and the season.
How to choose a local island in the Maldives?
Guesthouses in the Maldives are small hotels with 4-12 rooms. At the same time, the quality of the rooms is at a fairly high level: in each room, you have air conditioning, a toilet with a shower, a table and chairs, and sometimes a minibar. The rooms themselves are clean, well-maintained, and furnished with new furniture.
Of course, the cost of living is much higher than in neighboring India or Sri Lanka. But do not forget that the country imports almost everything: fuel, building materials, food, clothes, etc. In addition to this, there are also taxes on tourism activities. Owners of guesthouses add to these expenses not a significant profit.
Tourism is almost the only source of income for most Maldivians.
Restaurants and guesthouses mainly serve continental and Maldivian cuisine. The main products that use are rice, pasta, vegetables, beef, chicken, fish, spices [many spices], as well as marine inhabitants: lobster, crabs, and octopuses.
It is worth recognizing that the dishes are not very diverse. Therefore, do not consider local islands from this point of view.
However, the portions are really huge and quite satisfying. It costs lunch from $ 10 per person.
Transfer
One of the main features of the Maldives is the movement between the islands. Given that the distance between the northernmost and southernmost atolls is about 1200 km, then this is really a problem.
To date, a public ferry runs between all the inhabited islands, the cost of which does not exceed $ 10 one way. The main problem is that they run strictly according to a certain schedule and there are times when they are canceled for weather or other reasons. The second disadvantage is the travel time: from 1 to 12-15 hours.
Therefore, private boats (scheduled speedboats), which add to the public transfer between the islands, are a good alternative. The cost of the trip in this case is $ 10-80.
Guesthouses can arrange a private speedboat, but its cost will be $ 200 per trip.
For comparison: you can be delivered to resorts either on the hotel speedboat (from $ 90 per person in both ways), on a seaplane (from $ 360 in both ways), or on a domestic airline + speedboat (from $ 230 per person in both ways).
Local culture
If you go to the Maldives not only for the beach and the sun but also to get acquainted with the culture and tradition of the locals, then the local islands will not disappoint you in this regard!
Maldivians are very friendly people with their own traditions and culture. Despite the fact that they are Muslims, outwardly they almost don’t show it. Of course, there are some rules that should be followed when you are going to the local islands. But they will not cause you any significant inconvenience.
At the same time, pagan traditions that have appeared thanks to the African influence of the past times are still present on the islands.
On the local islands, you have the opportunity to see the real Maldives – without chic and frills. And the locals will be happy to help with this (they like to talk, just give them a reason).
The shops
On any inhabited island, there are several restaurants, groceries, and souvenir shops. There is one interesting feature – you should take off your shoes before entering the store.
In shops, you can buy a wide variety of products that can’t be found in the guesthouse. Similar shops on the resorts are simply absent. If we talk about souvenirs, they are much cheaper on local islands than in resorts.
Resort advantages
Resorts or island hotels are separate islands, the territory of which is occupied by one hotel. The size of such islands is usually much smaller than the size of the local islands.
The main feature of the resorts is a bungalow – private villas that are located either on the beach or on the water (with a higher price of course). The villa is equipped with everything you need: a bathroom, air conditioning, minibar, etc. In addition, the island usually has fitness centers, bars, restaurants, spa centers, diving centers, and water sports centers.
Transfer to the island is carried out by seaplane, speedboat, and domestic flights (with the following delivery to the island by speedboat).
The number of rooms depends on the size of the island. Usually in the range from 100 to 200. For comparison, a guest house on local islands usually has 3-10 rooms.
In total, there are about 130 resort islands in the Maldives. And every year 3-7 new ones open.
Privacy
One of the main reasons why people go to Maldives is privacy. And the local islands will not be able to fully enjoy this feeling. This is especially important for young couples. Therefore, your own bungalow is a great place to completely renounce the world and enjoy peace and tranquility.
The very small size of the island, plus its remoteness (not many resorts are located next to local islands) creates that uniqueness of separation from the outside world.
On the local islands, it’s still a little crowded and it will not be easy to find privacy.
Villa
Without a doubt, your own villa is the undoubted advantage of resorts, without which a resort is not a resort. As mentioned earlier, Maldivian bungalows are fully furnished villas located either on land or on water. Moreover, those who have a glass floor on the water [not all] through which you can watch the underwater world of the Maldives, and he is simply amazing!
The area of such a villa is really impressive from 55 to 1300 m2! The cost of a bungalow starts on average from $ 130 per night (including all taxes and fees, in the low season). But at the same time, you get at your disposal a beautiful view of the ocean and a chic villa!
Bars and entertainment
In the Maldives, there are no separate areas for large concerts or something like that. One of the reasons is religion, under the influence of which the adoption of certain laws takes place. Also, there are no clubs on the islands.
But all this does not apply to resorts where nightlife is boiling! There are bars, karaoke, restaurants, open-air discos, and entertainment programs of your choice. Every evening you have the opportunity to have a great time with a glass of wine and dance to modern music.
It should be noted that only at resorts alcohol is absolutely legal and accessible to everyone (above 18 y.o). For some people, it’s a decisive factor when choosing an island: resort or local. On local islands, and in the country as a whole, the consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
The value
The price you pay for the resort is fully justified. This is an indisputable fact. After all, the island is completely privately owned, and the staff will do everything to make you happy and come back again and again.
Perfect cleanliness of the beach, the bottom with no sharp remains of dead corals, well-groomed paths, and lots of greenery await you at the resort. There are no signs of negligence or trash on the island. Cleanliness and order in everything. But it is worth noting that this depends on the resort.
At the same time, you understand that all this requires constant attention, care, and funds to maintain. Resorts are a great place to relax, where you get what you paid for.
What is common between a local island and a resort?
Despite the obvious differences and advantages of both resorts and local islands, there are quite a lot of similarities between them. Taking all this into account, you can make a choice: local island or resort.
Ocean and sun
Yes, exactly, the most obvious similarity is the same water and the same sun. The color, temperature, and purity of the water are one and the same, whether it is a resort or an ordinary local island. In this case, there is always a chance to stumble on floating debris during snorkeling.
In the Maldives, the sun is the same everywhere. The Maldivian sun is merciless, you need to be careful with it because you can easily sunbathe, do not forget about sunscreen.
Beach
The excellent condition of the beaches at the resorts has already been mentioned. What about the local islands? In general, not so bad. On most local islands, the tourist beach is constantly cleaned and kept in order. Not as perfect as at the resorts, but still they try.
But still, it is worth saying that the size of the beach [and its presence on the island] may vary from island to island. Therefore, in this case, tourists are taken to neighboring uninhabited islands, where beaches are specially equipped for tourists.
Also, there is still a garbage problem on local islands. The authorities simply do not have time to export it in time and it accumulates. But on the local islands, things are changing very quickly and the problem with garbage is becoming less and less relevant. Many islands, such as Ukulhas, have already solved this problem.
Underwater world
Maldives’ underwater world is unique and inimitable in many respects. Crystal clear water; many fish, sharks, stingrays; colorful corals make this place unforgettable!
Many local islands boast an excellent house reef, where you can meet not only fish but also larger representatives of marine fauna. Resorts have the same benefits.
Underwater inhabitants do not care where to swim: whether it is a resort or a local island. Therefore, the same fish, stingrays, and sharks.
Activities
In the Maldives, there are a lot of water activities, both underwater (snorkeling and diving) and on the surface (jet ski, boat trips, surfing, etc.). Moreover, if we talk about diving or snorkeling, then tourists from local islands and resorts are taken to the same places. It is obvious that this rule only applies if the resort and the local island are located in the neighborhood.

I have visited Thoddoo 4 times in the last 5 years. Not so regularly visit it, unlike Rasdhoo or Ukulhas. But in recent years it has become super popular among tourists from Europe.
The island is located 67 km west of the capital Male. And 20 km north of the administrative center of North Ari Atoll – Rasdhoo. Thoddoo is a fairly large island by Maldivian standards – about 2 x 1 km. Moreover, a third of the island is reserved for farms, another third is the village, and the rest is the jungle. The population of the island is about 1400 people. Thoddoo is considered one of the largest producers of agricultural products in the country and is mainly known for its sweet watermelons.
Unlike many other islands, it is located as if separately.
Due to its size, Thoddoo offers magnificent beaches for tourists. Nowadays, there are two tourist beaches on the island located on opposite sides of the island.
Interesting fact: even in spite of its size, both tourist beaches are smaller in total than the beach in Ukulhas.
The first beach is located in the southern part of the island. It takes about 15 min from the nearest hotel to reach, the path passes through fruit farms. A great option, in this case, is a bicycle. Almost every hotel provides it.
The boundaries of the beach are conventionally marked by a fence of dry palm leaves. The beach is very clean and well maintained, but small. During high season it can be crowded. Therefore, everyone lacks sun loungers and hammocks (unlike Ukulhas, where there are many more). It’s very convenient to have a shower and toilet on the beach as well.
Tropical trees grow along the coast, through which numerous paths lead to the water. However, there is only one entrance to bikini beach. The sand itself is so white and you can walk on it without fear of cutting yourself on glass or dead coral. The water is clean and with almost no floating debris.
Thoddoo house reef is very long. However, there are not so many places for snorkeling. A small reef is located very close to the bikini beach. there are only a couple of corals and several species of fish. A truly beautiful reef with many fish (and even stingrays and sharks) is located off the coast – about 400 m.
I swam there without fins and don’t recommend it because you get tired while you swim back and forth. And if there is also a side stream, then spend all your energy while you swim to the reef. But it worth it. At the same time, from my own experience, I’d say the outer reef is not as rich with animals and fish kingdom as Rasdhoo. But corals are in better condition.
Never swim there alone! The currents can be very strong and you will not notice how quickly you move away from the coast!
The second beach is located in the north-eastern part – behind the stadium. From some hotels, it’s only 5 minutes walk. It’s smaller than the south beach, but there are also not so many tourists. There are sunbeds, hammocks for a comfortable stay. The advantage of this beach is the closeness of a house reef, which is only 200 m away. At the edge of the reef, I saw turtles, eagles, and even manta rays! But not so many fish and sharks.
They say that on the beach you can see the fluorescent plankton! Unfortunately, I’ve never seen it, but I saw it at Rasdhoo and Adaaran Vaddhoo Resort.
Cycling
The island is quite large and it will take a time to explore it on foot. Therefore, a good way is cycling. During morning or evening time you can easily go around the island and see what it is outside of the tourist beach.
Like other local islands, wildlife on Thoddoo is not very diverse. On the shore, there are many crabs and hermit crabs of various sizes. I saw how hermit crabs used a coconut shell, glass bottom, a bottle cap. In general, what they find is used as a home.
You can find gray herons on the beach sometimes. If she likes you, she will let you step closer. When it gets dark, you can see flying foxes sweep overhead. They are not dangerous to humans and eat fruits. From reptiles – small iguanas and very small geckos.
Well, mosquitoes, which are quite a lot on Thoddoo (depending on the season), unlike the neighboring Rasdhoo. Therefore, stock up on repellents. Most of them are near plantations, and not everywhere, but only in some places.
Snorkeling safari
There are two places for safari snorkeling: near Thoddoo and at Rasdhoo Atoll. In the first case, you will snorkel with turtles on a house reef. In the second case – visit three spots in Rasdhoo Atoll. What to choose? I would recommend both options because in this case, you will see how diverse and amazing the underwater world of the Maldives is.
Manta ray snorkeling. Mantas are the largest rays on the planet. The span of their wings can reach 6m! They feed only on plankton, so you shouldn’t scarry about it. There is a cleaning station near Thoddoo, where mantas come. I was snorkeling and diving there. The second option is better because mantas prefer to swim in deep water.
Local farm tour
Such entertainment you can provide by yourself or find a local who will tell you and show everything, or ask a manager at the hotel. A vegetable farm tour will surprise you with the possibilities of growing herbs and vegetables in the atolls, and you will stock greens and herbs for your favorite salad. Thoddoo is one of the few islands in the Maldives that export fruits and vegetables to other islands. Papaya, watermelons, bananas, coconuts, etc. are growing here. If you want to pick fruits from trees, please, firstly ask permission from the locals.
Other activities
Dolphin safari. An evening safari with a school of friendly dolphins that swim so close to the boat that you can try to touch them!
Visit uninhabited islands. They are next to Rasdhoo. Madivaru is a picnic island neighboring a white sandbank. Surrounded by the blue sea Madivaru sandbank is the best place for relaxing.
Night fishing. The Maldives is the place where everyone can try to catch fish using only the fishing line, hook, and bait. Moreover, it is often ladies and children who are more successful than gents! Fish can be grilled at the hotel.
Scuba diving
Two dive centers are now open on the island. I highly recommend everyone to try diving in the Maldives (no matter which island) because, after that, your thoughts about the underwater world will change forever! The beginner’s course includes theory class, skill training in shallow water, and the dive itself with an instructor. Price is 110 USD
If you are a certified diver, then I will disappoint you – all places for diving are in Rasdhoo Atoll. Therefore, if you have plans for diving, it’s better to take a few nights on Rasdhoo.
Thoddoo Infrastructure
The island has everything you need: a hospital, a school and a kindergarten, a gym and a football field. Two large mosques, one of which was built long enough.
The island has several restaurants and cafes where you can try local courses. I wouldn’t say there is a huge price difference. More or less it’s the same. The food on Thoddoo, as well as on other local islands, is not very diverse. Rice, tuna, fried chicken, noodles with chicken, vegetables, etc.). Tuna and coconut milk soup. Pancakes with tuna and coconut. Casserole with tuna and rice, all kinds of tuna pies. And of course, a variety of fresh. On average, dinner costs $US 10-10 pp.
Where to eat on Thoddoo
Where to eat: in a hotel or in restaurants? It depends on the hotel, if you have a good chef, then in the hotel the quality of the food will be definitely better. In this case, the cost will be the same on average.
Try these places:
Black Anchor Restaurant. You can choose between European and Maldivian food cooked perfectly. The menu includes reef fish, chicken breast, Caesar salad, summertime salad, tuna steak, pasta with chicken and mushrooms.
Sun Sky Restaurant. Cuisines Italian, Indian, European, Asian, Malaysian. This place doesn’t look very cozy at the first sight but the more you interact with pleasant staff the more you want to stay here.
Seli Poeli Cafe & Restaurant. The restaurant has great food, natural fruit juice, nicely cooked fish (but can be overcooked. The service is good, but the waiting time for the food is too long.
Maracuya. The food here is nothing special, it is the same as in other budget places on the island, but the passion fruit fresh is the best!
Food Land Restaurant & Bakery. The only place on the island, where you can try a home bakery.
Thoddoo Cafe. Not for tourists, if you want to try true Maldivian cuisines – this is a perfect place.
Giardino. Cheap place with basic maldivian and western food.
At local stores, you can buy fruits, juices, drinks, groceries, and other necessary stuff.
If you look at Thoddoo on Google Maps, you will see that some hotels are located closer to the beach – Ari Heaven Thoddoo, Thila Farm View, and Summer Stay Thoddoo than others. In fact, they are not located there, but in the village. Local laws do not allow building hotels only in a certain area located in the village.
Why is that?
Unlike many local islands, where tourism is developed, Thoddoo is a bit different. Many people on the island are farming and sell their products both to resorts and to the capital. Therefore, they do not want to give their land for the construction of another hotel.
Where to stay on Thoddoo?

Fulidhoo Island is in the Vaavu Atoll, just 57km (or 1,5 hrs by speedboat) from Male Airport. At only 700m x 200m and with only 300 permanent residents.
It is famous for Maldivian cultural events like Langiri, a traditional dance with drums and Thaara. The island has a large lagoon, which is used as a natural harbor.
The island’s north side is covered by lush trees and bushes and in the northwest overhanging trees form a natural tunnel.
You can chill out at the dedicated bikini beach and swim in the clear waters of the lagoon. The high season is from December to April, so it’s the best time to visit for swimming and doing excursions.

Fulidhoo Caves

It is known for its unique underwater cave formations, swim-throughs, and caverns, which are home to a diverse range of marine life.
The dive site is suitable for experienced divers, as there are strong currents in the area. Divers will typically enter the water near the island’s eastern tip and descend to a depth of around 25 meters (82 feet) to explore the caves and caverns. The caves and caverns are formed by overhanging rocks and coral formations, and are inhabited by a variety of fish and other sea creatures, including lionfish, moray eels, and schools of colorful reef fish.
The highlight of the dive site is the “Cathedral”, a large cavern with an opening at the top that allows sunlight to filter down into the cave, illuminating the colorful marine life inside. Several smaller caves and swim-throughs can be explored during the dive.

Other activities on Fulidhoo
Fishing. The Maldives has long been dependent on the sea. As such, fishing is the heart of the economy. It’s possible to arrange many types of fishing trips such as Big Game Fishing and night fishing.
Snorkeling Trip. If you’re not scuba diving go for a snorkel trip instead and check out the stunning coral gardens, huge school of fish around the area.
Water sports. Stand-up paddleboarding is a fun and relaxing way to explore the calm waters around Fulidhoo. For those seeking a more exhilarating water sports experience, jet skiing is available on Fulidhoo. Visitors can rent jet skis and zoom around the island’s turquoise waters. Fulidhoo’s steady sea breeze makes it a great location for windsurfing as well. Kayaking is a peaceful and enjoyable way to explore the island’s lagoon and nearby areas.
Fulidhoo Infrastructure
Note, there is no ATM in Fulidhoo, so you need to withdraw cash in Male or bring cash in USD as it’s widely accepted in Maldives.
There are several small restaurants and cafes on the island that serve local and international cuisine. Most of these establishments are located along the island’s main road and offer a range of dining options, including seafood, Indian, and Maldivian cuisine.
Fulidhoo has a small health center that provides basic medical services to locals and tourists. The center is equipped with a small pharmacy and a trained medical staff who can provide medical assistance in case of emergencies.
There is a mosque located on the island where locals go to perform their daily prayers. Visitors are welcome to visit the mosque, but it is important to dress modestly and remove shoes before entering.
Fulidhoo has a small ferry terminal that provides regular ferry services to neighboring islands in the Vaavu Atoll. The ferry terminal is located on the western side of the island and is easily accessible by foot or bicycle.
In the local shops, you can buy ice creams, local fruit (bananas, papaya, watermelon, apples, oranges), biscuits, bottled water, crisps, soft drinks, nuts and nice chocolate.

Thundi Cafe. This cafe is located near the beach and offers a range of dishes, including Maldivian cuisine and international dishes. They are known for their fresh seafood and homemade pizzas.
Seashell Cafe. This cafe is also located near the beach and serves a variety of dishes, including local Maldivian food, as well as Indian and Chinese cuisine. They are especially known for their breakfast dishes, including traditional Maldivian breakfast.
Salsa Bar and Restaurant. This is a popular spot for visitors looking for a lively atmosphere and good food. They offer a variety of dishes, including pasta, burgers, and seafood, and also have a bar with a selection of cocktails and other drinks.
Saina Home Restaurant. This is a small, family-run restaurant that offers traditional Maldivian cuisine, including fish curry, rice and lentils, and fried fish. They are known for their friendly service and authentic flavors.

Dhigurah is located 96 km southeast of Male in southern Ari Atoll. The length of the island is almost 4 km, the width (in the widest part) is 300 m. The island narrows in a southward direction and ends with a sandbank. You can go to the neighboring resort LUX * Maldives.
In the local language, Dhivehi, the name of the island can be directly translated into ‘Long Island’ and has consequently the longest beach of the atoll (and in one of the longest in Maldives). Its surrounding waters are known to be a famous whale shark area.
A huge lagoon can be found protecting the west side of the island, which is one of the more reliable places to see manta rays in this area, particularly in the southwest monsoon.
Unfortunately, you can’t go snorkeling by your self as it’s a protected area this day.
Things to do in Dhigurah
Beach and house reef
The entire western part of the island is occupied by the beach (it’s around 4 km!). Nowadays, not many dead corrals can be found here.
The beach is lined with palm trees, which provide natural shade from the sun and create a tropical ambiance.
The bottom of the beach is sandy and comfortable for swimming. Great for children. On the southern edge of the beach is a road that runs through the jungle. The whole way is about 3 km. If you wish, you can go along the beach, but at high tide, it will be not so easy. The island ends with a long sandbank that leads to the neighboring island of LUX South Ari. There you will find a sign warning you to ban visits to this resort.
The places there are very picturesque and very few people go there. The highest level of privacy will be provided!
House reef is located on the opposite side of the island. You should swim on the edge because there is a chance to see whale sharks and manta rays. However, due to safety reasons, it’s better to do this in fins and not alone.
Whale Shark Safari near Dhigurah
If, however, you still could not see whale sharks on the house reef, then it is better to go on a safari near Sun Island – the place where the chance to see these fish is much higher. Whale sharks in the Maldives, if we compare to Cebu in the Philippines, are not artificially fed to attract. Therefore, no one will give you a 100% guarantee that today you will see them. Usually, you can see 1-2 sharks during the safari, which usually lasts 2-3 hours. Since the place is very popular and, in fact, the only available, it attracts a lot of tourists (sometimes up to 100) from both neighboring resorts and other atolls.
Once somebody sees a shark, a boat on the radio station with each other and within 5-10 minutes everyone already knows where it was found. Therefore, you need to be ready and, if possible, immediately jump into the water because they swim quickly and can go to the bottom, where they will not be caught up.
Night fishing
For centuries, the Maldives was primarily a nation of fishermen. It is so entwined in the lives of Maldivians that there are celebrations when a good catch is caught and complaints when fish is scarce at your dinner tables.
To experience the satisfaction of catching and cooking your fish, a night fishing trip (offered by the hotel) is the way to go. You leave before sunset to find a good spot near a reef. The boat crew will show you how to use the lines, hooks, and sinkers. Later, you will be provided with a BBQ dinner. The trip lasts 1,5-2 hrs.
Manta ray snorkeling near Dhigurah
The best time to see manta rays near Dhigurah is from December to April, when the water is clear and the visibility is excellent. During this time, the manta rays congregate in large numbers in the area, making it a prime spot for snorkeling and diving.
One of the best places to see manta rays near Dhigurah is a dive site called Manta Point. This site is located just a short boat ride from the island, and it’s known for its large population of manta rays. Here, you can snorkel or dive with the manta rays as they glide gracefully through the water, feeding on plankton.
Picnic on the Dhigurah sandbank
Escape the island and enjoy the serenity and solitude of a sandbank for a half or full day. Day trips are arranged by the hotel with BBQ to the sandbank which has pleasant walking tracks and is well-vegetated. The white sandy beaches are perfect, with a beautiful lagoon for a swim in the crystal clear water.

Scuba diving near Dhigurah
Dhigurah is one of the destinations that offer good diving conditions and opportunities for all levels.
The dive boat (or “Dhoni”), with a rooftop tanning deck, is fully equipped for a full day of diving. It is possible to hop on board to join for one, two or even three dives and the boat goes out every day!
There are over 30 dive sites that offer a great variety of corals, schools of fish, rays, turtles, coral formations, and the largest fish on the planet – the whale shark!
Kuda Rah Thila, Broken Rock, Manta Point, and Maamigili Beru are among the most popular dive sites located close to Dhigurah.
Kuda Rah Thila

It’s a marine-protected reef since 1995 and is one of the most famous reefs in the Maldives. Only 10 mins from Dhigurah and a very exciting dive with thousands of blue stripe snappers often being hunted by sharks, tunas, giant trevallies, and jacks. Some very beautiful soft corals with a large swim thru at one end. Kudarah Thila is made of the main reef that has shallower tops on each side, and a tunnel crossing the deeper coral ridge on its western side. As the site is very famous, there might already be divers here when you arrive.
Broken Rock

Life: Fan corals, napoleon wrasse, turtles, scorpionfish, moray eels, and soft coral
Visibility: up to 30 m
Best dive period: December to April
Broken Rock is one of the most well-known dive sites in South Ari Atoll. It is a canyon in an oval-shaped coral reef 50m long and 2m wide. The reef was cracked in two areas by water streams and has a large crevice in the very center that formed a tunnel. The bottom of the reef is covered with predominantly soft corals, while two beautiful coral blocks are at 25-30m depth on the north side of the reef.

It’s also known as Reethi Thila is a great dive with five large blocks with canyons in between them. It is known for large barracudas, grey reef sharks, anemones, as well as eagle rays, and surgeonfish following you to the surface. Beautiful fan corals and soft corals form fields around the base of the thila can be found in the cracks and overhangs.
Maamigili Beru
Current: Can be strong
Life: Moray eels, lionfish and nudibranchs, eagle rays, Mobula mantas and whale sharks
Visibility: up to 25 m
Best dive period: December to April
Maamigili Beru is an outer reef of the local island Maamigili. The top reef starts at 7 m and is dominated by hard coral formations. You will see a great variety of moray eels, lionfish and nudibranchs. Eagle rays and mobula mantas are also common here. During some time of the year, whale sharks can also be seen cruising along the reef.
Other activities in Dhigurah
Resort day visit. The hotel on Dhigurah can arrange a day trip to Vakarufalhi Island Resort, Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa, Conrad Maldives, or Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa. Transfer, entrance fee, lunch, and resort facilities (pool, SPA, etc.) are in the package.
Dolphin watching. There are both Bottlenose and Spinner dolphins in Ari Atoll. They typically travel in small pods ranging from five to fifteen.
Water sports. You can go for a trip by jet ski, take classes of wakeboard or water skiing, or get around by kayak or SUP.
Dhigurah infrastructure
Nowadays, there are several dining places in Dhigurah. The restaurants serve Western, local and Asian food. The prices are affordable.
More and more hotels are opening (not guest houses) that keep prices high. But still, the island is much less crowdy, compared to Thoddoo or Ukulhas.
The island also has a small health center and a pharmacy, which can provide basic medical services. However, for serious medical emergencies, tourists will need to be transported to the nearest hospital on a nearby island.
In general, the island is more suitable for divers, beach lovers, couples, and families.
With respect to the local religion, there is no alcohol available in Dhigurah, however, guests who would like a drink can visit a nearby resort only 10 minutes away.
Additionally, there are several small shops on the island where tourists can buy essentials, souvenirs, and snacks.
There is ATM on the island as well.
Where to eat in Dhigurah
Shell restaurant and cafe. This cafe is located on the main street of the island and serves a variety of dishes, including pizza, burgers, and sandwiches. The restaurant has a laid-back atmosphere and is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat.
Cafe’ Dune. There aren’t many places to dine on Dhigurah outside hotels, so you’ll probably end up here. The atmosphere is pleasant, the service is kind, and the rates are low (about one-third to one-half of those at hotel restaurants). Although the order processing time might be too long and the quality of the food can vary, this is still a wonderful value.
Absolute Thai. Thom Yam is really good. It’s wow the service the location and the food itself enjoyed every day small tip portion for 2 is much bigger per person than a portion per 4.
Dhigurah Beach Cafe: This is a cozy little restaurant located on the beach, where you can enjoy a variety of international and Maldivian dishes. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere and serves fresh seafood caught by local fishermen.

Most hotels in the Maldives are 5* or 5+*. There are much fewer 4* or 3* hotels.

Therefore, let’s consider the main differences between 4* and 5* hotels:
– Accommodation. In the vast majority of 4* hotels, the most budget accommodation are rooms/bungalows (blocks for 2-4 rooms). Individual villas will cost more. However, the rooms are quite spacious and have everything you need. In 5 * hotels, the choice of villas is usually more than in 4 * (for example, there are 11 types of rooms/villas at Kuramathi Island Resort 4*). They are more spacious and have more personal space.
– Meal plans. Maldives 4 * hotels offer a minimum half board (breakfasts and dinners), full board (breakfasts, lunches, and dinners) or all-inclusive meals (this will be discussed in more detail below). Please, note, that water and drinks are not included in the half/full board. In 5 * hotels, this is less common. Also in 5 * hotels, there are more specialized restaurants of Thai, Indian and other cuisines.
– Hotel services. In 5* hotels, the service is more personal and generally higher than in 4* hotels. All 5+* hotels provide you with a personal butler who will help you with everything. These hotels usually do not offer half board or full board as the default meal plan.
– Villa price. The price of the basic villa type in a 4* hotel is, on average, 20-30% lower than in a 5* hotel.

Maldives hotel price
3* hotels’ price start from 250-300 USD/night, 4* hotels – from 350-450 USD/night, 5* hotels – from 600-900 USD/night, 5+ hotels – from 1500 USD/night.
The price directly depends on the villa type and meal plan. The lowest prices for hotels are May-July and the highest is for the New Year. And also during the high season from January to April.
The full hotel in the Maldives includes accommodation in the selected villa category, a meal plan, transfer from/to the island, taxes, and fees. This is a critical point when choosing a hotel in the Maldives, as the meal plan and transfer can significantly increase the cost of the entire tour.
In addition, each hotel offers its own discounts and special offers. They can be valid for all countries, or only for a particular region (for example, only Europe). In addition, such special offers have additional conditions:
— Period of validity of discounts;
– The booking period;
— Minimum number of nights;
Tour operators and travel agents regularly receive such special offers.
Maldives villa types
All villas in the Maldives hotel can be divided into 2 types: villas on the island and villas on the water.
At the same time, villas located on the island can be located directly on the beach or in the depths of the island (with a garden view). Beach villas can have a sunset, sunrise, water villas, jetty boats, and blocks in the water view. Therefore, when choosing your villa, be sure to check the hotel plan, Google Maps, and YouTube videos.

Water villas, in 99% of cases, will be more expensive than beach villas. On average, by 20-30%.

NOTE: in the Maldives, ALL beaches are public. Including those located on private island hotels. That is, any hotel guest can walk along the beach opposite your villa.
Meal plans in the Maldives hotels
Meal plans in the hotels can be divided into 4 categories:
Breakfast only
This type of food is offered mainly by 5* and 5+* hotels. At the same time, the resort offers several specialized restaurants of Italian, Indian and other cuisines.
Half board
Half board includes breakfast and dinner (drinks not included). Serving type – buffet. In very rare cases, this can be a la carte (usually, only for 5+* hotels).
Some hotels offer the so-called “half board +” type of food, which includes, in addition to breakfast and dinner, also alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Full board
In a full board meal plan, besides breakfast and dinner, they also add lunches, but without drinks. Sometimes steel water is included as well.
“All-Inclusive”
In addition to food, the All-Inclusive package includes not only drinks but also discounts on excursions or spa treatments, water sports equipment usage, etc.
However, every hotel is different.
Some hotels offer Premium All-Inclusive/Gold All-Inclusive. Usually, the main difference is alcohol drinks – in the upgraded All Inclusive you’ll have premium brands.
If you want exactly the All-Inclusive plan, then it is better to book the hotel with the All-Inclusive concept. For example RIU Atoll Maldives, OBLU at Sangeli, Atmosphere Kanifushi, Sun Siyam Iru Veli. These hotels offer the most complete All Inclusive meal plans.
NOTE: All-inclusive hotels do not offer many excursions/activities in their plan. Usually, only one excursion is included.
By and large, you need to choose “All Inclusive” only if you like cocktails. Otherwise, it is better to choose the regular full-board meal plan.
Maldives transfer
In the Maldives, you can get to your island resort in one of the following ways:
Speed boats
Modern and powerful boats with a capacity of 16-22 people. Such a transfer is provided by hotels that are located near the Airport (North Male Atoll and South Male Atoll) – Bandos Maldives, Meeru Maldives, Sun Siyam Olhuveli, Saii Lagoon, etc.
The main advantage of such a transfer is the cost. It starts from 70-80 USD/person, round trip. There are usually no baggage restrictions. For babies, 0-2 y.o transfer is FOC, children 2-12 years old – 50% discount. Boats also operate at night, unlike seaplanes.
How is this transfer provided? Your guide will meet you at the airport. Collects guests from other flights and puts you all together on a boat to the hotel.
Please note – this is not a private boat just for you. However, the hotel can arrange it as well.
Seaplanes
The Maldives has the largest seaplane fleet in the world! It is operated by three companies: TMA (Trans Maldivian Aero), Maldivian, and Manta Air.
The total number of aircraft at the moment is 70+. The dominant position is occupied by TMA, which has 57 aircraft.
Therefore, for regular flights, hotels use the services of these companies. The aircraft capacity is 16-19 people. At the same time, on the way to your hotel, it can make several stops at other island resorts
The main disadvantages of Maldives seaplanes:
– Price. It starts from 350 USD round trip per person for a 15-minute flight. The maximum cost is 1200 USD. At the same time, reservations can ONLY be made through the hotel. Directly from the carrier company is not possible.
– Availability. Flights are operated only during the daytime from 7:00 to 16:00. Many island hotels can only be reached by seaplane.
– Baggage restrictions. The total weight of your luggage can’t exceed 20 + 5 kg per person. Above this limit – for an additional fee. At the same time, the luggage itself can be delivered to you only in the evening.
The main advantages of Maldives seaplanes:
– Speed. The average flight time is only 15 – 45 minutes. But you will have to wait for your departure for 1-2 hours.
– Stunning views. From a bird’s eye view, a stunning view of the Maldives opens up. This is the only way to admire all the beauties of the atolls from the air.
– Unique experience. There are not many countries in the world where you can try this type of transfer.
Domestic flights + speedboat
There are 11 airports on local islands (some of them also have international status), besides Velana International Airport. Some hotels can only be reached by such transfer (eg Pullman Maldives Maamutaa, Hideaway).
Some hotels like The Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Reethi Faru Resort offer both seaplanes and combined local airline + speedboat transfer.
The most important advantage of this transfer is accessibility. There are 2-6 flights per day to most airports from Male. Upon arrival, you will be met by hotel staff and escorted to the boat to your island. Domestic flights have a baggage limit of 25+5 kg.
Domestic flights can ONLY be booked through a hotel reservation. You can also book on the airline’s website, but you still need a speedboat to the resort from the local island.
NOTE: There are no public transfers (ferries or scheduled speedboats) to/from island resorts in the Maldives. Some private companies provide private speedboat transfers, but in most cases, it will be more expensive than booking directly with the hotel.
Things to do in Maldives hotels
If your vacation goal in the Maldives is not only the beaches but also rich underwater life, you should choose a hotel with an excellent house reef. A complete list of these hotels can be found here.
Most of the hotels are located on small islands. So not all of them offer good entertainment programs.
In the daytime, you can go on safari snorkeling, swim with dolphins, try different water sports (kayak, windsurf, sail catamaran), scuba dive, play tennis or beach volleyball, work out in the fitness center, relax in the spa, relax in the pool.
Some hotels offer unique services,

What is the size of the Maldives island resort?
Most of the hotels are located on very tiny islands (Gangehi, Nika Island, Constance Halaveli). Others stretch for several kilometers (Kuramathi, Hideaway, Sun Island, Six Senses Laamu). Therefore, if you plan to stay on the island for more than 4 nights, you should take consideration to keep this in mind.
In the past few years, hotels have increasingly been built on artificial islands. Such hotels have almost no palms, bushes, or jungles. Check drone photos/videos before going to the Maldives to avoid such misunderstandings.
Another thing is stone blocks that protect the island from waves and erosion. Such blocks can be seen on Google Maps and compared with the location of your villa on the island.
Adults-only and family hotels in the Maldives
Most hotels in the Maldives are family-friendly. For children, 1-11 y.o, Kid’s Club services are provided, where you can leave the child with a nanny. In addition, children’s activities are organized. There is a playground and an animator. In most cases, the hotel has special offers for families with children (free meals, transfers, etc.).
Some family-friendly hotels: Dhigali Maldives, Anantara Kihavah, Ayada, Fushifaru
Other hotels like Hurawalhi, You & Me Maldives, and Centara Ras Fushi only accept guests over 12 – 18 years old. Such hotels may have special offers for honeymooners who come to rest without children.

– Websites features. Such aggregators are interested in the cost of the hotel because their commission depends on it. Therefore, they offer options that are better for them, and not to you.
— Taxes and additional fees. Some websites have already started to show the cost with taxes and fees, but the transfer to/from the island is paid separately. Therefore, the cost of the transfer must also be added to the final cost.
– Limited choice of villa types. Not all villa types are presented on the websites.
– Limited choice of meal plans. You can choose breakfast; breakfast and dinner; breakfast, lunch, and dinner; all-inclusive. But very often the hotels offer additional meal plans with drinks or premium all-inclusive plans.

Male, the capital of the Maldives, is densely compressed onto an island of about two square kilometers (1.25 square miles). It’s one of the world’s smallest capital. Top sights to check out in the capital city include:
Republic Square. The square was constructed in 1989 and features a flagpole with the nation’s largest Maldivian flag waving proudly. This area is also a popular spot for locals to meet.
The National Museum. After the Maldives became a republic, the country established the National Museum. The National Museum provides insight into the country’s heritage. Its collection encompasses royal antiques, artifacts, coins, photos and other memorabilia from the days of the Sultanate. Thrones, palanquins and statues are highlights. There are even artifacts from the pre-Islamic era, almost 1,000 years ago The museum is located in Sultan Park, which was part of the Sultan’s palace. The National Art Gallery is within the complex too.The museum is just a short walk south of Republic Square.
Sultan Park. Located adjacent to the National Museum, Sultan Park is an open green space for locals and visitors to enjoy. The park features sculptures, playgrounds, greenery and fountains, in addition to pathways for strolling and benches for when you need to rest. However, foreigners need to pay to enter the park.
Grand Friday Mosque. The biggest and most important mosque in the country, the Grand Friday Mosque is an excellent example of simple yet striking architecture. Opened in 1984, it has a modern plain white marble exterior and gold dome. The main prayer hall inside the mosque can accommodate up to 5000 worshippers and has beautifully carved wooden side panels and doors, a specially woven carpet and impressive chandeliers.
Old Friday Mosque. This is the oldest mosque in the country, dating from 1656. It’s a beautiful structure made from coral stone into which intricate decoration and Quranic script have been chiseled. Overlooking the mosque is the solid, round, blue-and-white tower of the munnaaru – the squat minaret. Though it looks a bit neglected rather than particularly old, this minaret dates from 1675. To one side of the mosque is a cemetery with many elaborately carved tombstones.
Mulee Aage. Mulee Aage saw long service as the official residence of the president of the Maldives. Known for its colorful facade, this palace was used on and off until 2012 and now serves as a governmental office for holding meetings. Though you cannot see the interior, you can stand next to the front gates and take a few photos of the landmark building. Most walking tours around the city stop outside the palace.
Fish Market. Nothing beats a visit to the local market to feel the pulse of the city, interact with the locals, and understand their way of life. One of the most fun things to do in Malé city is heading to the local Fish Market abuzz with activities. Considered the soul of Malé, it is a fascinating place to watch an assortment of fresh fish from the adjacent harbor including yellow-fin tunas and huge octopuses.
Tsunami Monument. Close to the Villingili Ferry Terminal, this lovely memorial for the 2004 Tsunami victims is a tranquil place. With its interesting design and structure. One of the most soul-soothing things to do in Malé is to gaze at the beautiful view around & beyond and spend a few quiet moments here.
2. Go to Hanifaru Bay
Hanifaru Lagoon is located on the eastern side of the Baa Atoll and has an open channel facing west that leads into a gradually shallower dead-end bay. There are only handful of places in the world where visitors can get so close to so many manta rays, snorkeling alongside them as they barrel-rolling and ‘fly’ in formation through the dense plankton – a behaviour that has become known as cyclone feeding. The high plankton concentration can lead to crazy feeding aggregations with up to 200 mantas and (sometimes) whale sharks in the bay.
UNESCO declared the Baa Atoll a World Biosphere Reserve in 2011, the Maldivian government implemented strict regulation with the scientific help of the Manta Trust organization.
Nowadays Hanifaru Bay is considered to be the world’s largest manta ray feeding station.
Only snorkeling and freediving is allowed in the bay, as divers and bubbles in the water column disrupt the normal feeding behavior of the animals. As they mostly feed quite close to the surface, diving is not necessary for a great experience.
Between May and December, during the South West Monsoon, a lunar tide also occurs which results in a massive build-up of plankton in the bay – the best time to go to Hanifaru Bay.
3. Go to see whale sharks
Unlike many other whale shark excursions offered around the world (like in Cebu, Philippines), finding whale sharks in the Maldives to swim with is a fully natural activity without feeding them to attract them. Whale sharks can actually be found in the Maldives throughout the year and they can often be found in large numbers.
Swimming with whale sharks in the Maldives takes place in the open water and not close to the island, and you might need to hop on and off the boat a number of times to maximize your time with the whale sharks as they can cover incredible distances quite quickly.
Best places to go:
– South Ari Atoll (Whole year around);
– Baa Atoll (May-June, October-November);
– Addu City Atoll (Quite rare);
Scuba diving is possible as well with whale sharks, but you have to be lucky to see them as they are swimming too fast. That’s why snorkelers are more flexible while sailing to search for whale sharks.

5. See Bioluminescent Plankton
At the first sight, the neon blue balls washing up the shores might be confused with some alien form of life that is trying to invade the Maldives at night.

You just need to stir up the water with your feet, and if plankton is there, it will immediately splash with gorgeous blue lights. However, you will rarely see such a picture on the beach, it’s much more likely to happen when cruising offshore.
WARNING! There is no season for the plankton, nor the island/resort where you can see it with a 100% chance. Everything about how lucky you are. Noone knows where and when you can observe it!

7. Try scuba diving
The Republic of Maldives is a coral archipelago located in the hub of the Indian Ocean to the South-West of India and Sri Lanka. It consists of 26 individual atolls and stretches for about 900 kilometers from north to south. The equator divides the Maldives near the Addu Atoll.
The Maldives is a chain of almost 1200 islands most of which are uninhabited. Approximately 200 islands are inhabited by the local people and another 150 islands are fashionable resorts.

You can dive at any season of the year but from April to October the monsoon brings a large amount of precipitation. (from April till June it rains the most) However heavy storms are unusual here.
The marine life. Maldives house about 1100 fish species, 400 muscles, and 83 varieties of echinoderms including manta rays, grey reef sharks, snipers, parrot fish and etc.
The average diving depth is 15-30 m.
8. Try big game fishing

Many potentially great spots remain to be explored where as per our findings big fish will surely be hunting for potential prey.
Trolling. Every angler has their sights set on a successful day of fishing, but it’s more than just throwing some bait on a line and hoping for the best. There are different techniques used for every type of fishing, whether it’s inshore or offshore. Anglers troll for Sailfish, Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Wahoo.
9. Participate in boduberu show
The Boduberu is a traditional Maldivian performance, consisting of rhythmic drumming, singing and dancing.
Boduberu is performed by about 20 people, including three drummers and a lead singer. They are accompanied by a small bell, a set of drums also known as a bodu beru, and an onugandu – a small piece of bamboo with horizontal grooves, from which raspy sounds are produced by scraping.
It is presumed that boduberu took part in the Maldivian culture in the eleventh century through African regions.
The song could be of any chosen type such as romantic, patriotic or satire. When the beat upsurges and the song reaches a crescendo, the dancers from the group make wild, frantic movements. The traditional costume of Boduberu is a sarong and a white shirt.
10. Enjoy the white sandy beach
The Maldives are known for their white sand beaches that stretch along with the atolls. The sand is smooth, not hot and easy to walk on.
The sugar-white sand and striking blue water make for the perfect beach vacation backdrop. Most island resorts and local islands offer their own private beach, complete with lounge chairs and umbrellas.

The Maldives is made up of more than 1,100 coral islands. Therefore, snorkeling is naturally spectacular! All resorts and inhabited islands in the Maldives offer this activity. However, you’ll want to choose an island with an in-house reef where you can go snorkeling directly from the beach instead of on a prearranged boat trip.
Some of the most beautiful fish you may see in the Maldives include butterflyfish, clownfish, angelfish, and parrotfish, in addition to sea turtles, manta rays, eagle rays, stingrays, whale sharks, reef sharks, and eels. Keep in mind, there are several dangerous types of fish: lionfish, triggerfish, moray eels, and stingrays, as stings or bites from these animals can be harmful.
12. Try Surfing
The Maldives has a great array of left and right reef breaks suiting most intermediate to advanced surfers. You can still pick up some small clean waves in the dry season of November to February but it is not regarded as part of the main swell period. It would still be worth packing your board.
Surfing in the Maldives is tempered by the North-East and South-West monsoons. During the North-East monsoon (from March until April), conditions are optimal in the Southern Atolls. From May to October, during the South-West monsoon, the best surfing area is in the Northern atolls or the Central atolls.

15. Visit an uninhabited island/sandbank
Uninhabited island. The Maldives is a chain of about 1100 islands scattered on both sides of the equator. The local people inhabit only about 100 of them. Resorts and private islands occupy another 130-180 islands. And the rest are wild uninhabited islands of all possible shapes and sizes: from 20 meters to 1-2 km long!
Located not so far from resorts they are easy to reach. The locals usually call them picnic islands. Some of them remain private.
You can stay overnight on an uninhabited island as well. Great opportunity to feel how Robinson Crusoe was living like that.
You can still find some atolls that are not as crowded with tourists. Among of these are Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Laamu Atoll, Lhaviyani Atoll, Raa Atoll, and Baa Atoll.
Sandbank. Compared to an island covered with greenery and lush vegetation – a sandbank is just a piece of land without any plants. The average length is from 6 to 100-120 m. Some of the sandbanks are allocated near the local islands and some could be found just in the middle of the ocean!
However, this is an incredible opportunity to sneak away from civilization and enjoy the scenery of the Indian Ocean.
16. Local island visiting
An excursion to a local island is a true way to experience the everyday life of the native people of Maldives.
As usual, the resorts offer such trips to the local islands. Walking around the island don’t forget to drop at a gift shop where you may buy handmade staff of the local craftsmen.
Several islands like Thoddoo offer an opportunity to visit farms and to try freshly grown fruits and vegetables.
Sometimes, some of the islanders will prepare entertainment and food for you. So, this is your chance to sample real Maldivian food and culture. You can see them dry fish, or build boats, which makes for a very special experience.
