Mathiveri is a small island located in the Alif Alif Atoll of the Maldives. It is a popular destination for tourists looking for a more authentic and affordable Maldivian experience. These stingrays are dangerous to humans because they can sting! This is usually due to being stepped on. They have a habit of burrowing in the sand, so they are not visible. But generally, they are fearful. In addition to the rays, there are young sharks.

As the name suggests, this is the best beach on the island to watch the sunset. It’s located on the western side of the island and is a quiet and secluded spot with beautiful views of the ocean.

Local beach

A picnic island is located near the beach. You can get there swimming. But you should be careful! Well on the way to the island, there is a strong current that changes every hour.

The strongest current is in the afternoon; it’s getting lower in the morning and in the evening. Some time ago this part of the beach was bigger, but because of the activity of locals the shores began to get washed away, and the sand was washed into the channel.

The sand is white there without dead corals as it washed away into the channel. In the evening you can swim there and enjoy the sunset.

Bikini beach

Located on the eastern side of the island, Bikini Beach is a designated area for tourists to sunbathe and swim without wearing traditional Islamic clothing. The beach is secluded and has calm waters, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling and swimming.

The island has a private beach for tourists where you can swim in a bikini. The water is not very deep, so the island is suitable for families with children.

House reef

The house reef is easily accessible from the shore, making it an excellent option for both experienced and novice snorkelers. There are some resorts that are open for day visitors. For example, a trip to the resort of Nika will cost you $ 99 per person ($ 37 per entrance and $60 for transfer). Other islands are Gangehi, W Maldives, Constance Moofushi, and others.

Mathiveri infrastructure

The main sources of the economy of the island are fishing and tourism. The island has Fishing Boats which are mainly involved in the yellowfin tuna fishing industry. All the fishing boats are registered and licensed under the fish processing and exporting company. these companies export raw fish products to European countries.

Accommodation. Mathiveri Island has several guesthouses and hotels that offer comfortable and affordable accommodation options for visitors.

A few groceries can be found as well. There are no souvenir shops on the island.

Ristorante Alí Babá. This is an Italian restaurant that offers a variety of pasta dishes, pizzas, and seafood. The restaurant is known for its homemade pasta and pizza dough.

Lemon Drop. This is a cafe and restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They offer a range of international cuisine such as burgers, sandwiches, and salads. They also serve coffee, tea, and smoothies.

Where to stay in Mathiveri?

A seaplane flight to Mathiveri takes 15 minutes and costs approximately $268 one way per person. Seaplane transfer is to be booked in advance (5 days before arrival). Seaplanes fly only during daylight hours from 06:00 till 16:00.

Dhiffushi is a part of Kaafu Atoll. It is located 36,6 km northeast of Male, the capital of Maldives. Another inhabited island of Thulusdhoo is situated just 8 km south of Dhiffushi. The island itself is small (just like the majority of inhabited islands); its size is 950 m x 200 m. Approximately 1200 people live in this little paradise. Beach and house reef

There are two bikini beaches on the island – one on the northern part of the island, a small one, and the other on the opposite side of the island.

The first beach has rather a good entry to the water and the sand is nice. But the channel leading to the deck is at about 10 m so you should be careful with the running boats. Each guest house owns its lounge chairs and umbrellas. The length of this beach is around 50-70 m only.

However, they don’t surround it with a fence and the locals can also come to the beach. You may sunbathe in a bikini on this beach (but there are still signs prohibiting that). The locals who use the beach are very tolerant of this rule.

The second beach is bigger, but not very clean – quite a lot of garbage. Most of it is garbage that brings the ocean to the island. During the low season, this problem is particularly relevant because of the western monsoon, which brings all the garbage to this part of the island.

Near the beach a lot of algae. Therefore, you need to go a little to the left to swim in clear water. There is shallow water, so the beach is suitable for families with children.

On the beach, many sunbeds and built artificial shadows. Despite this, the southern tip of the beach has a great reef for snorkeling, at the edges of which there are several living reefs.

Also, there is something like a sandbank, which is a bit hidden under the water at high tide.

Small white crabs are running everywhere on the beach, they don’t bite, but it’s very difficult to catch them!

After sunset, the light turns on, which attracts stingrays, small sharks, and fish. One of the few entertainments on the island in the evening.

Other activities on Dhiffushi

Beach Dinner. Spend the night of your lifetime at an exclusive table specially set up for you, with your toes in the sand, listening to the waves lapping the shore, while staring into the twinkling lights of Dhiffushi beach.

Surfing. Surfing in Dhiffushi is not so popular compared to Thulusdhoo or Himmafushi. It’s because of the remote location of surf spots. So, in any case, you have to hire a boat to go nearby.

Canoe. Indulge yourself with some adventure of exploring the lagoon and beauty beneath – all from just above the sea sitting in a canoe. You can’t ride to Meeru as it’s a private island resort, so you can’t anchor there.

Dhiffushi infrastructure

You will find on the island a school, a mosque, a health center, a stadium, a couple of shops and cafés, several hotels, and plenty of Maldivian hammocks (“joali” in Dhivehi). There is no ATM in Dhiffushi.

In the case of an emergency, you’ll have to go to Male. That’s why make sure that you have taken everything you need with you in advance.

In most places, you can pay in US dollars, though you’ll receive change in either dollars or Maldivian Rufiyaas and won’t always have the choice to choose between the two.

The island has three dive centers, the prices are quite high compared to other islands. The island itself is not for diving, so for this it is better to choose another place.

But there are 2 water sports centers: water ski, surfing, windsurfing, kayaks, etc. Good location for this, because there is no coral, the deep part is very close.

In general, despite some annoying, and unusual to us, it is very pleasant and friendly people. They love to talk about their island, what, where and how, were happened, they are interested in you and want to show themselves and their country from the best side. Most of them speak English very well.

Disadvantages – sometimes it is very difficult to get rid of such an interlocutor. Perhaps this feature is inherent in the entire population of the region (Maldives, India, Sri Lanka).

Advantages – the service they have even in cheap hotels just at the highest level. We are ready to do everything for the sake of the client, always with a smile, always helpful, everyone will tell, show, there is not even talk about any rudeness.

Almost no garbage on the streets. There is an unspoken rule, according to which every resident is obliged to clean up the area around his house every day.

How to save money in Maldives? Each of us tends to spend as little money as possible on vacation and get as much emotion as possible. If we’re speaking about Southeast Asia (Thailand, India, Indonesia, etc), we know that it’s possible to spend holidays with so much money. Affordable accommodation and quite low entertainment prices make this area an attractive destination for tourists from around the world!

It wasn’t true to the Maldives until recently. Staying on the sideline, the islands were considered to be a paradise to reach tourists. About 5 years ago things started to change, and today we have an opportunity to spend cheap holidays in the Maldives. So-called ‘Budget Maldives’ appeared.

Why relatively? It’s because the whole trip to Maldives will cost you more, than to other Asian countries, and there are several reasons for that. However, there are ways to save some money even in the Maldives.

Accommodation

Budget holidays in the Maldives include accommodation not on the luxury resort, but in guest houses. This accommodation is a hotel, but smaller in size and cost. The cost depends on the location of both the guest house and the distance of the island from the capital.

How To Choose a Guest House?

When choosing a guest house, consider the following:

– the island, where the guest house is located. On all islands, local taxes are added to the cost – 20-22% of the original amount. Prices and taxes in the Maldives – a topic for a separate post.

– reviews on Tripadvisor, Booking, and Agoda. The most substantial and actual reviews can be found on Tripadvisor, and pay an attention to the negative ones,

– the date of posting the information about the guest house on Booking or Tripadvisor. New guest houses, which have no reviews and ratings, usually offer lower prices for accommodation than those that have a certain status. But in this case, there is a risk to deal with incompetent staff.

Accommodation costs vary from $53 to $227 per night. And don’t expect that accommodation costs will decrease shortly.

There are several reasons for such a high rate:

– electricity. It’s produced by a diesel-electric generator, which provides the whole island with electricity. Diesel is expensive.

– construction materials, which are needed to build a guest house.

– water. All the water that flows in each building on the islands – rainwater or from a well. It smells bad you shouldn’t drink it. Desalination stations have already been built on some islands, so this issue will be resolved over time.

– tourism taxes. It is another expense item of the owners of guest houses, which considerably affects prices.

– competition between guest houses. It’s obvious: the more guest houses on the island, the lower prices you get. There are only 3-5 guest houses on the majority of islands, so they can establish any prices as they wish (in most cases it’s still very low). Transport networks are being developed, the things are changing.

Where To Book Guest House?

It seems that the answer is obvious – on Booking, Agonda, etc. There are often discounts there, so it’s profitable to book there. That’s true, but other rules are applied to Maldivian guest houses (at least to the houses that have a high rating).

All the OTA listed above collect a commission of up to 20% from the booking price.

Meals cost

Along with accommodation, food is one of the main parts of your expenses. The country imports almost everything, so the cost of the products is quite high.

Every guest house has it’s own mini-restaurant offering local and continental cuisine. While booking a guest house, if you want meals to be included (lunch or dinner), it’ll cost you $15-20 per person. If you’re paying at the guest house itself, the cost will depend on the number of services you need, but it is usually higher than the cost stated above.

Children between the age of 2-12 are usually offered a discount on meals in a guest house.

There are cafes and small restaurants for the locals almost on each island, where you can try Maldivian cuisine at low prices. For example, the main course and fresh juice will cost you $10-18. The only disadvantage is that all the dishes are really spicy.

The best way is to take half-board (breakfast and lunch or dinner) and sometimes to go to cafes. In this case, you’ll be able to compare and choose the best option for you.

How to save money in Maldives for activities

Everyone chooses for themselves the type of holiday they want: active or beach style. The second option is cheaper, but in this case, you won’t be able to enjoy the stunning beauty of Maldives to the fullest, because it’s not only about the white beach, bright sun, and turquoise-colored waters.

The magnificent underwater world gives an unforgettable experience of Maldives!

In general, the list of activities is almost the same on different islands. But does it mean that, for example, diving on one island is better than on another one? Each island and its surroundings are unique, so it’s hard to choose the best one.

Let’s take a look at the main activities on the islands:

Fishing

There are several kinds of fishing: morning fishing (from $45), evening fishing (from $43), and big game fishing ($225+). The prices differ also depending on what fish you’re going to catch. Evening and night fishing are the most expensive ones because your chances to catch a large fish grow!

That fish can be cooked in your guest house. And that’s free! But you need to check with your manager in advance to avoid any problems.

Snorkeling

It’s the simplest and the most popular activity, and you’re usually not expected to pay for it. Near every island, there is a house reef, where you can go swimming. But the most interesting points are located outside the house reef, and you need to go there by boat. The cost is $75+ per person, it includes visiting 3 different points. The trip itself lasts about 3 hours.

On different islands, depending on the season, you can go snorkeling with manta rays, turtles, and whale sharks.

Diving

Thousands of divers from all over the world visit Maldives every year to enjoy the unique and stunning underwater life. Clear warm water makes diving open for everyone. There is at least one dive center on each island. The prices do not differ much.

If you have never experienced diving in your life you can try a beginner’s course (Discover Scuba Diver). You’ll be diving with an instructor. The price starts from $120 (depending on the island). For those who have a certificate, the price starts from $53 (a guide, a boat, and equipment are included), group diving is cheaper.

Picnic island

There are uninhabited islands near most of the local islands where Tourists can go every day, and usually for the whole day. The price starts at $45. Transfer by boat and cool drinks are included. Meals – at an additional cost. You will likely be alone on the island all day long!

On some islands, they offer the “Robinson Crusoe” option. The thing is that you’re taken to an uninhabited island and left there alone for a night. It costs $150 and includes a transfer, dinner, tent, and breakfast. The only island that offers this activity is Omadhoo.

Resort visiting

Resorts are located near most of the local islands. But day visits can be organized not to all of them. It’s because of some restrictions. Nevertheless, by paying some amount of money (starting from $35, but usually it’s $227), you can visit this stunning place (transfer, meals, and drinks, and alcohol are included). At an extra cost, you can stay there for a night or take spa treatments.

Dolphin-watching trips and romantic dinners. The cost of cruising starts from $90 (a boat and drinks included). A trip is usually organized in the evening, at sunset.

A romantic dinner can be arranged either on the beach, sandbank, picnic island, or on the guest house garden, or on an uninhabited island (if there is any nearby). The dinner will cost $135+. It’s an unforgettable experience for couples, especially to have breakfast at sunrise or dinner at sunset on the uninhabited island.

Apart from this you can do water skiing, ride a jet ski or a kayak (a great opportunity to explore the whole island), take a cruise on a sailing catamaran, etc. On request, you’ll be sent a price list with all services.

The costs of activities vary and depending on the island and on the guest house, there are no general rules, they set their own prices. The Maldivians like to bargain, so feel free to ask for a discount! So negotiating is the best way to save money in Maldives.

Transfer in Maldives

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to the development of local tourism is the transfer between the islands. Even though it is regular, it goes not frequently. The situation is gradually changing, but it still needs time.

That’s why transfer costs depend on the type of it. Let’s check the possible options.

Private or public ferry.

It’s the cheapest and slowest type of transfer. It costs $3-10. The traveling time is 1,5 – 10 hours. Nowadays you can get by ferry, not to every island, remote islands can be reached only by domestic airlines. More info is below.

Another advantage of this transport is the fact that within one atoll you can go to the neighboring local islands in the morning and get back in the evening.

Speedboat

It runs between the islands according to the fixed timetable. Nowadays, there are a lot of itineraries between Male and local islands. The cost of a ticket is $35-120 depending on the island. The traveling time is up to 3 hours. This is the most suitable mode of transfer to save money in Maldives.

Notes: you should book your seat in advance, otherwise there is a high chance the boat will be full.

Seaplane

It’s a fast, but not cheap transfer. It’s usually offered to those tourists, who’re planning their trips to resorts. The cost starts from $379 per person, besides there are some luggage limits. The traveling time is 20-40 minutes. Another advantage is the stunning view of the Maldivian islands at a low height! This type of transfer is available on request, the flights are available only in daylight hours.

Domestic airlines

Today there are 11 airports in Maldives (7 local and 4 international). There are several connecting flights between them. You can travel to some remote islands (for example, Gan or Hanimaadhoo) only by domestic airlines. The cost of the transfer depends on where you’re booking your ticket. Private speedboat

On request, every guest house can provide you with a speedboat. The cost of transfer starts from $380 for a boat. This type of transfer is profitable if you have a group and you don’t want to wait for a ferry. Nowadays you can get to almost every Maldivian island by one or different transfer types. It’s all about money.

Also, remember that on Fridays public ferries are not available. Speedboats are available, but not to all islands. But it’s better to avoid coming or departing from the Maldives on Fridays.

Other costs

Here we’ll talk about souvenirs, groceries, mobile services, and the Internet.

If you choose a souvenir shop in Male or on local islands, it is better for the second one. On each local island, there are several such places. There are very different souvenirs, mainly from wood, and coconut with elements of fish bones and shark teeth. A simple magnet will cost $ 1-2. Many souvenir shop owners make their own.

Groceries and other staff. There are usually several grocery and hardware shops on the islands. In a grocery shop, you can buy fruit, juices, sweets, etc. The prices here are quite good. Beaches

Hanimadhoo is known for its stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters, white sand, and a peaceful atmosphere. Some of the most popular beaches on the island include:

Hanimadhoo Beach. This is the main beach on the island, located on the western side. The beach is long and wide, with soft white sand and clear blue waters. It’s an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing.

Other activities

Island hopping. You can visit nearby islands and explore their unique culture and traditions. You can also enjoy a picnic on a secluded island and relax on the pristine beaches.

Sunset Cruise: Enjoy the stunning sunset views while cruising on a traditional Maldivian boat called a dhoni. You can also spot dolphins and other marine life during the cruise.

The only disadvantage of this Maldivian paradise is the distance to Male. It’s approximately 300 km. So the only type of transfer is a domestic flight. But this remoteness can be made up for by the island’s nature, true solitude, and magnificent views.

Hanimaadhoo infrastructure

Hanimaadhoo is a quiet fishing village with lots of tree shade and swings. Fishing and agriculture are what most of the 2500 inhabitants of the island do for work.

Apart from the international airport, there is a village on the island that occupies about 1/3 of the island. The population is 2,500 people. There is an ATM, a hospital, a school, a mosque, a post office, and a police station – in fact, they can be found on any inhabited island.

At the northern end of the island, a climate observatory is located. The data provided by the observatory is used not only for the weather forecast but also for monitoring climate changes in the region. This issue is very important in the Maldives, because sea level is rising, and soon (in 50 years or so) the majority of Maldivian islands can disappear underwater.

In recent years more and more people are moving to Hanimaadhoo from Hathifushi and Hondaidhoo. It is planned that this island will soon become an important tourist center of the northern province of Maldives.

There are only 5 guest houses and an eco-hotel on the island.

Because of its remoteness from Male the only kind of transfer to the island is a domestic flight. The price is around 210 AUD/way.

Haa Alif Atoll is referred to as Thiladhunmathi Uthuruburi (Northern Thiladhunmathi Atoll) is the northernmost administrative division of the Maldive. Within this atoll, the island of Utheemu is historically significant since it is the birthplace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu and is famous for fighting against the Portuguese in the 16th century.

The North and West areas of the atoll are fantastic for beginner divers. The dive sites here are more sheltered and the rays like to hang out in the channels. There are a lot of overhangs in the channels where lobsters, lionfish, and manta rays can be seen pretty regularly. The overhangs have lots of pufferfish, and there is almost always something to see!

Maadhoo (Filladhoo) Wreck

Experience diving the Maadhoo Wreck, an 18m depth dive site near Filadhoo Island. With walls covered in corals, marine life playing around the ship, and many fishes around, you should be ready to enjoy this dive!

Just above the wreck, you can find small corals, sponges, starfish, and sand eels. Clams and octopuses can be seen in the sandy areas surrounding the wreck. Nurse sharks inhabit the underside of the metal beams, while moray eels are often spotted around the first propeller area.

Mathi Faru

The top reef is a healthy table reef with overhangs and small caves that house morays, eels, crabs, shrimps and rays. Further down, there are large coral heads on the wall with green, brown, and red soft corals creating a contrast with the blue water. Large stonefish can be found hiding inside the corals and sometimes stingrays at the bottom. Caves going into the rocks offer possibilities for exploration by more advanced divers.

Alidhoo Caves

With its stunning white coral sand and clear blue water, Alidhoo is an excellent open-water diving location, but the real attraction is what lies beneath. The drop-off to the North of Alidhoo drops down to a maximum depth of 20 m. and leads onto a beautiful wall that forms its top reef. Here divers can see some sites of interest around the reef including eagle rays, sharks, Napoleon fish and barracuda; sometimes batfish are coming as well.

Finey Thila

Finey Thila is a dive site located 250 meters south of Finey island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Maldives. The main block on the east side starting at 12m and the smaller western block are both made of two blocks, that host soft corals and many species such as soldierfish, squirrelfish, stingrays, nudibranchs, and trevallies to name a. From big pelagics like tunas, sharks and fusiliers to small reef fish colored in yellow, blue, and white. Hundreds of shoaling fishes are also common in this area of the Maldives.

Muraidhoo Corner

For divers, Muraidhoo Corner is the place to be. The reef starts in shallow waters and goes slowly down to 20 to 30m in places, but if you can find a way to swim over the rocks of the point along the sea, you get a much better picture of what this dive site has to offer. It is composed of a series of gullies and canyons, with small overhangs and a large ‘aquarium’ section covered in colorful soft coral.

Divers can also observe many different sea creatures from jacks, fusiliers, sharks, turtles to schools of snapper and eagle rays.

Himmafushi island is a part of Kaafu Atoll. It is located just 17 km to the north of Male. Huraa and Thulusdhoo are situated a bit farther. The size of the island is 900 m x 750 m, and just 850 people live there. Not that many. It is a typical local island, which can be walked around in 40 minutes even if you walk at a snail’s pace.

The island was extended almost double in size, but a new area hasn’t been developed yet.

Things to do in Himmafushi

Bikini beach and house reef

Bikini beach is on the island’s northern tip near some guest houses. A short strip of sand with fringed coconut trees has not yet received the official status of a tourist beach, but this is the only place on the island where you can sunbathe and swim in a bikini.

There is no house reef near Himmafushi, so you have to take a snorkeling safari trip to do this activity.

Surfing in Himmafushi

Himmafushi is a famous surfing destination in Maldives. Check below the most favorite surf points.

Jailbreak

Himmafushi home break Jailbreak is just a five-minute walk away, free to paddle out any time of day. It’s named after the fact it’s right in front of jail and until recently it was actually illegal to surf there (as the entrance was on private property), but now it’s opened! It’s a perfect right-hander with three sections. Jailbreak offers waves from intermediate surfers to advanced surfers. On a good swell, you can ride along walls and tube sections.

Sultans

Across the channel from jail this spot is for those who want something a bit bigger and challenging this is the spot and it’s certainly not one for beginners or low-end intermediates. Sultans is a fast (right-hander) wave creating two sections, the first peak mellow leading to the second. Both are perfect barrels giving a ride of around 200 m. Although usually crowded, it’s quite deep and this makes it more of a competitive surf.

Honkys

Honkys is a left-hand point break opposite of Sultans. The first peak is pretty mellow but jacks up into the second section with a height almost double the first giving a long perfect ride.

Ninjas

A slightly more mellow break (also referred to as Piddlers) Ninjas is one of the more beginner-friendly and longboard friendly waves in the area and is best surfed at 1 m and under and breaks much slower than most of the waves in the area. The break is named Ninjas because of the many Japanese surfers who like to surf it. It is accessible 20-25 minutes from Himmafushi by boat.

Cockes

One of the most famous surf breaks in the Maldives this right-hander is very similar to Jailbreaks actually, although slightly faster on the right swell. The wave’s name is due to the Coca-Cola factory nearby on the island of Thulusdhoo. So you have to hire a private speedboat to go there.  Works best with winds from south and northeast.

Chickens

This wave holds swell sizes from 1m to well over 3m and provides rides up to 500m long. This is a long left-hand wave with 2 sections where you can easily get barrels on the last section of the wave. The name of this wave is due to the poultry farm that exists on the island, and not due to surfers’ reaction to high swells! It’s a 30 min ride by speedboat, near Thulusdhoo local island.

Pasta Point and Lohis

These are private surf points that are available for guests staying on Cinnamon Dhonveli and Adaaran Hudhuranfushi only.

Snorkeling safari near Himmafushi

Clear, warm water and diverse marine life make snorkeling in the Maldives one of the best places in the world. The countless reefs throughout the atolls each offer a unique experience. Some lagoons are even so close to shore that a few kicks and strokes and you’re swimming amidst the friendly fish, harmless sharks and shy rays. The reefs all over the Maldives are inhabited by various kinds of aquatic flora and fauna and are great for a relaxing day watching fish on the reef.

Night fishing

The surrounding reefs of Himmafushi are abundant with game fishes like trevallies, snappers, and groupers. But you can try line fishing and check your luck trying to catch some fish for dinner. Lulling waves and the amazing starscape of the night sky accompany you on a memorable night fishing trip. You can ask your hotel to cook it on a grill.

Scuba diving

Although scuba diving around Himmafushi isn’t as great as diving on Rasdhoo, Dhangethi, or Fulidhoo. But there are still plenty of dive sites to explore in the area and the island has a couple of well-established PADI dive centers (such as Feena Dive) that will show you the underwater world.

Other activities on Himmafushi

Dolphin cruise. The Indian Ocean around the Maldives is home to hundreds of dolphins and the local spinner dolphins are always keen for an awesome show of aerial acrobatics! But it’s not 100% guaranteed to see them it’s still a fun day cruising around the islands and perfect for those who don’t wang to get wet.

Resort day visit. It’s possible to arrange a day trip to Cinnamon Dhonveli, Paradise Island, or Adaaran Hudhuranfushi with lunch and drinks.

Sandbank trip. A unique opportunity to stay on a small piece of land in the middle of nowhere!

In fact, if you don’t want to do surfing, it’s better to go to Dhiffushi.

Himmafushi Infrastructure

There are no ATMs on the island, so make sure that you have got cash (ruffiyaas or AUD). Credit cards are accepted at guest houses, but they charge a 4% fee for processing.

There are several groceries (for example, a large bottle of water costs just $1, fruit and vegetables – $0,1-$3), and gift shops available on the island. You can have a meal at two small restaurants; there you can try dishes of local cuisine.

Here are some prices on dishes at restaurants:

a large bottle of water – $1,7;
drinks – $1,7;
Lavazza coffee – $3 (coffee there is not of the best quality);
a burger/sandwich – $3,7;
noodles – $3,7 – $6;
rice & fish – $4 – $15.

You can also buy fish from the locals and ask to cook it at a guest house. The prices are ok, but they want to charge more from tourists rather than from locals, that’s why you should ask a menu with all the prices listed.

Where to eat on Himmafushi

Outside the guest houses, in the village there are some restaurants, if you want to know the real tastes of Maldivian cuisine, especially some of the post-dinner snacks cooked deep-fried, known as ‘khedika’.

Oevaru. Tuna, pasta with seafood, curry everything was tasty. Serves both western foods (sandwiches, burgers). Good price for good food. Could not complain very modest and friendly!

Anmadey Cafe’. Very local style cafe in Himmafushi. Good tuna fish rice. Big serving and satisfying…go for the local Maldivian dishes. Skip the western stuff. The fish and chips, and grilled tuna look rather pitiful

Sea Breeze Cafe. Another local-style cafe with Maldivian food and snacks. Management is friendly and really kind. If the place is full it’s possible that serving time gets longer.

Bun Me. The best to get a quick sandwich with all meat you need for your day
