    Thinadhoo Travel Guide

Thinadhoo is one of the five inhabited islands of the atoll Vaavu. It is located 78 km south of Male. Next to the island are Felidhoo and Keyodhoo. Do not mess up this island with another Thinadhoo located in the atoll Gaafu Dhaalu – in the south (ie, further south) of the Maldives.

    Things to do in Thinadhoo

    Beach and house reef

Despite its rather small size, Thinadhoo can boast one of the best bikini beaches in Maldives. The beach is really nice: no dead corrals on the beachside where you enter the ocean. The house reef surrounding the island is gorgeous which makes Thinadhoo one of the prettiest places in the Maldives.

    Check: Budget tours to Maldives

    thinadhoo-beach-view

You can easily find shade under the palms and relax on one of the sunbeds. Thick vegetation creates plenty of private and enclosed places where you can enjoy your privacy.

The house reef of Thinadhoo is nice but full of dead corals. There is plenty of fish and some colorful corals. You won’t get enough of it even if you’ve been snorkeling for several days. The most interesting part of the reef, as usual, is on the edge. The easiest way to explore the reef is while drifting along with the current without any movement.

    thinadhoo-fishes

    Snorkeling safaris

Sea turtles, clownfish, scorpionfish, and a great variety of colorful tropical fish can be easily spotted by snorkeling, both starting from Thinadhoo beach, being the reef easily accessible from the shore.

If you’re tired of snorkeling around the island you can visit one of the closest outside reefs. Not to say that night snorkeling with sharks is definitely a must! That point is near Alimatha Resort you can enjoy the company of nurse sharks which are completely safe and friendly for humans. There you can meet around 20-30 sharks! Isn’t that impressive?

The diving should be described in particular. In the “shark” place mentioned above, it’s possible to dive as well. The only problem is the number of divers – there were a lot of them! So it’s better to wait until the very end when all of the divers ascended. Because in a while dozens of sharks appeared from nowhere all the way around so that was really unforgettable experience.

    thinadhoo sandbank

    Uninhabited islands and sandbanks

Ambara Island. About one hour trip from Thinadhoo there is uninhabited Ambara Island, with a beautiful coral reef, a low seabed, it has a vast variety of marine life.

Bodumohara island. Deserted island for those who love to relax in crystal clear waters with a beautiful and low seabed. After the marvelous snorkeling, there will be a lunch on a table dug directly in the sand.

Sandbanks. This beautiful sandbank is perfect to admire the colors that you have hardly seen before. It is surrounded by very low waters for several kilometers, it is always deserted and it guarantees absolute privacy. During clear days the seawater offers incredible shades of blue.

Other things to do include water sports, dolphin watching, and night fishing.

    thinadhoo-vaavu-atoll

    Scuba diving near Thinadhoo

Vaavu Atoll is a true geographical wonder. It is a boot-shaped atoll and the ‘toe’, Fotteyo Muli is the easternmost point of the Maldives archipelago.

Vaavu Atoll boasts Fotteyo Falhu – the largest unbroken barrier reef in the Maldives. The reef is 50 km long and the easternmost point of the Maldives archipelago. One of the features of this diving area is the deep channels known as Kandus that bring in fast-flowing currents full of nutrients.

    night dive sharks

    Alimathaa Night Dive

    Depth: 20-40m
Current: Medium, but can be very strong
    Visibility: 10-20m
What to see: nurse sharks, eagle rays, octopuses

Alimatha is an island resort in Vaavu Atoll.  The current is mostly moderate to extremely strong bringing in white tip reef sharks, giant trevally, tuna, huge schools of snappers, unicornfish, and masses of fusiliers. But you have to go here to see tens of nurse sharks coming every night. This is a night dive that attracts divers not only from nearby local islands but liveaboards as well.

    diving

    Miyaru Kandu

    Depth: 10-40m
Current: Medium, but can be very strong
    Visibility: 15-30m
What to see: sharks, eagle rays, tuna, and Napoleon

Miyaru Kandu is a fascinating channel dive in the Maldives that features many small caves on both sides of the channel and numerous overhangs. The entire channel has been declared a protected marine area. A variety of marine life, including tuna, large schools of grey reef sharks, white tip reef sharks, and Napoleon wrasse can be seen here, as well as many colorful reef fish.

    Golden Wall

    Depth: 10-25m
    Current: Medium
    Visibility: 10-20m
    What to see: soft corrals

Golden Wall features several vertical walls, caves, and overhangs. Along the exterior of the reef, the wall is covered with yellow sponges and is teeming with colorful reef fish. Caves and overhangs full of pink, green, yellow soft corals hang to make it so easy to just get lost in the beauty of the dive.

    Fotteyo Kandu

    Depth: 10-30m
    Current: Medium to strong
    Visibility: 10-20m
    What to see: reach diversity

A vast array of marine life that can be found here, as well as a wide variety of colorful soft and hard corals, make this dive unforgettable. If diving early in the morning, divers have a chance to see eagle rays triggerfish, potato groupers, grey reef sharks, schools of white trevally, tuna, barracuda, surgeonfish, swordfish, as well as turtles and some other creatures. The site is so big that you have to do at least 3 dives!

There are only two dive centers on the island. One of them is owned by Plumeria Boutique Hotel and the other — Blue Horizon.

    thinadhoo-drone

    Thinadhoo Infrastructure

The island is divided into two parts: a village in which 120 people are officially registered. And in fact, only about 40 people are living. There are very few local islands where you can see a situation like that. Between the village and the bikini beach stretches the jungle. And almost no rubbish. It’s clean and well-maintained. The road to the beach takes 5-7 minutes of walking.

Only a couple of shops, two dive centers, and a café you can find on the island. Surprisingly, there are 6 guest houses (mostly for Italians) and a hotel Plumeria Maldives where Eastern Europeans usually spend their holidays. There’s no school, stadium, or hospital on the island.

    Where to eat on Thinadhoo

Most of the guests staying in Thinadhoo are having their meals in hotels as there is only one place to eat outside.

Le Bois Cherry. The only restaurant in Thinadhoo. Cute and cozy, the chef is very good, the food is tasty and you have a lot of options like Maldivian, Indian, Italian etc.

  • Bodufolhudhoo

    Bodufolhudhoo

Bodufolhudhoo is a small island in the Maldives. It’s part of Alif Alif Atoll (also known as North Ari Atoll) and about 85 km west of Malé. The island is next to the inhabited Mathiveri and Nika Island Resort. The island is even smaller than Mathiveri, only 0.5 km long and 0.3 km wide.
    Around 500 people live there.

Shopping in Bodufolhudhoo offers a glimpse into local Maldivian life, with a selection of small shops catering to both residents and visitors. There is an ATM to withdraw local money. Credit cards aren’t widely accepted—only some guesthouses and restaurants take them. Card fee is 4%.

There are only 2 restaurants on the island. They offer Maldivian, Asian and Western dishes.

    Bodufolhudhoo-drone

    Things to do in Bodufolhudhoo

    Bikini beach and house reef

There are 2 tiny beaches on the island: bikini beach (for tourists) on the west side and local beach on the south-east parts of the island.

The bikini beach is small and can be super crowded during high season. There is a natural shadow with various trees, hammocks, a lot of sunbeds, Maldivian swings, children’s playground. The beach is generally clean, but during off-season, some litter can be found. You can only enter the water from one side, especially if you are with children. Otherwise, you risk getting hurt by corals.

On the beach, you can find many lizards, funny hermit crabs (a living toy for children), and crabs. Storks, crows, and other small birds fly here, on the top of a tree near the pier is a favorite place of the flying fox. In the morning and evening, you can observe sharks, moray eels, and stingrays. Great place for а perfect holiday!

The house reef is a great place to start exploring the underwater world of the Maldives. A huge number of fish of different shapes and sizes, stingrays swim quite close, if you swim further, where the bottom is no longer visible, you can meet sharks. The corals are in good condition.

Outside the bikini beach, make sure to cover your shoulders and knees.

    Manta ray snorkeling

Experience the magic of snorkeling with manta rays near Bodufolhudhoo. This area is renowned for its vibrant marine life and is home to several manta ray cleaning and feeding stations. Local dive centers or your hotel can organize guided excursions to these sites, ensuring a safe and memorable experience. The best time to encounter manta rays is January-May, when plankton-rich waters attract them in larger numbers.

During the trip, you’ll swim next to manta rays as they glide through the water, spinning and feeding on tiny plankton. It’s a beautiful and unforgettable sight—like watching a slow, graceful dance under the sea.

    Sandbank visit

Take a short boat ride to a beautiful sandbank surrounded by clear, turquoise water. It’s the perfect spot to relax, swim, or snorkel in peaceful, shallow lagoons. Some trips include a lunch/dinner right on the sand, making it a simple but special way to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives. Since sandbanks depend on the tides, the timing of the trip may vary.

    Snorkeling safari

You can join a guided snorkeling safari outside Bodufolhudhoo house reef and explore some of the best reef spots in North Ari Atoll. You’ll visit a few different sites by boat, each full of colorful corals, schools of fish, sea turtles, rays, and reef sharks. It’s great for all experience levels, and all the gear is provided. Some trips also include drinks and snacks, and if you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins along the way.

    Scuba diving

Bodufolhudhoo is a great base for diving in the North Ari Atoll, with access to over 20 dive sites—including famous spots like Maaya Thila, Hafza Thila, and Beiru Thila. You can try Discover Scuba Diving course (theory, practice and actual diving) or take the Open Water Diver courseto be able to dive by yourself in the future.

Diving conditions are generally excellent, with warm water year-round (27–30°C), visibility up to 30 meters, and a range of sites for all skill levels. Some dives have strong currents, perfect for drift diving, while others are calm and beginner-friendly.

You’ll have the chance to see an amazing variety of marine life, including reef sharks, manta rays, turtles, eagle rays, moray eels, Napoleon wrasse, and schools of colorful reef fish.

    Restaurants in Bodufolhudhoo

Lagoon Breeze Restaurant. Lagoon Breeze is the in-house restaurant at Lagoon View Guest House on Bodufolhudhoo, and it’s a great spot if you’re looking to enjoy a variety of flavors. Their menu brings together Maldivian, Asian, and Western dishes, so there’s something for everyone.

To start, you’ll find a mix of soups like Tom Yum with prawns, Cream of Chicken, and Cream of Mushroom. They also offer fresh salads, including Caprese, Caesar, and a tasty grilled vegetable salad.

For mains, there’s plenty to choose from—Spicy Green Fish Curry, Thai Green Chicken Curry, Indonesian-style Nasi Goreng and Bami Goreng, grilled fish, burgers, steaks, and chicken breast dishes.

As a bonus, if you’re there in the evening, you can catch the unique experience of watching lagoon sharks being fed—right from the beachfront. It’s a nice mix of good food and local flavor, both on the plate and in the atmosphere.

Pizza Lite. Another solid spot for lunch or dinner. Despite the name, Pizza Lite only offers about four types of pizza—but their grilled fish and prowns is excellent. They offer other Maldivian, Asian and Western food as well. Sit upstairs if you can; the view of the waterfront is worth it. They’ll bring you a small bottle of water before you order (not complimentary). Just be prepared to wait around an hour for your food.

  • Fulhadhoo Island

    Fulhadhoo Island

The island of Fulhadhoo is administratively a part of Baa Atoll but geographically separated from it. The distance to Male is around 100 km. Next to it are 2 more inhabited islands: Fehendhoo and Goidho. The remoteness of this place from the main tourist islands makes these places truly wild.

    fulfadhoo beach view

    Things to do in Fulhadhoo

    Beach and house reef

The beach is the pearl of the island. The length is nearly 1 km! For inhabited islands – this is truly unique! Depth increases slightly with distance from the beach. The edge of the house reef is far enough – about 800m.

    fulfadhoo beach view 1

The beach is equipped with several places with sunbeds, where you can comfortably lie. Although they belong to guest houses, any tourist can use them regardless of the hotel he lives in.

In the western part of the island, there is a rather beautiful house reef, which is best explored during high tide. But do not forget about the current, which in this place can be quite strong. Behind the reef, 50m stretch of one of its sandbanks, of which there are 5 in these places (plus a private uninhabited island, which can only be visited by obtaining permission and paying some fee).

The eastern beach is mostly for locals. Just around 50-60 years ago, locals were walking to Goidhoo to get a transfer to another atoll or Male as it was the only way.

Fulhadhoo is perfect for guests who are looking for a peaceful getaway and joy in nature. The island is also suitable for families with children, as one of its lagoons forms a tiny natural pool with shallow water, as warm as the Maldivian weather.

    Sandbank visiting

There are a lot of easy-to-access sandbanks nearby. Local hotels provide full-day trip-inclusive sandbank visiting, guided snorkeling, lunch, and water.

The other option is a picnic island visit with lunch and snorkeling as well.

    fulfadhoo mantas

    Safari snorkeling

Fulhadhoo is surrounded by the most amazing display of vibrant corals and fish in the area and the famous Coral reef garden will take your breath away.

You can take a manta trip and enjoy it as some of nature’s most elegant creatures glide around you in the water, twisting and turning with the currents, providing a truly fascinating display.

    Fulhadhoo Infrastructure

About 100-150 inhabitants live on the island. There is no harbor for speedboats and big boats, so if the locals need to go somewhere, they will go to a small dingy to Goidhoo, and there will take a speedboat to Male.

Some local shops, football grounds, a mosque, two local cafes, and a dive center.

At Fulhadhoo, only 4 guest houses are currently open, so even in high season there are very few tourists and there is enough space for everyone. That can’t be said about Thoddoo or Rasdhoo, wherein a season it is really crowded.

If we talk about garbage, then it is, but a little, mostly in the jungle and on the eastern part of the island.

Thus, this island is perfect for white beach lowers, privacy, and the pristine beauty of the wild Maldives.

Hurry up, after just a couple of years everything will be changed.

There is only one local cafe where you can try local cousins. That’s why the only option for having a meal is your hotel.

    fulfadhoo sunbends

    Transfer

Speedboat runs daily except Friday to Goidho, from it by dingi to Fulhadoo.

    Male-Fulhadhoo at 10:00

    Fulhadhoo-Male at 13:30

Cost – $ 65 per person one way.

Another option is through Dharavandhoo, but only on a private boat, the cost is $ 200 + the flight ticket.

    Hangnaameedhoo beach area

    Things to do in Hangnaameedhoo

    Bikini beach and house reef

The bikini beach is just 5 minutes’ walking distance from a hotel. The beach is equipped with chairs, loungers, and hammocks to relax which is really nice. Here you can swim, sunbathe and snorkel in a bikini. The area is fenced, but you can go outside without any problem. In general, the beach size is almost the same as in Omadhoo – another inhabited island in this area.

The house reef is long and you can snorkel either in the west reef or in the east reef. The rich diversity of corals, fish, sharks, and rays can be found there.

    Hangnaameedhoo sandbank

    Sandbank visiting

Whenever you feel like getting away from it all and having a relaxing time on your own, hop on our boat and let us take you to the private sandbank the experience is yours for a two-four hours slot. This bare sandy bank with just a few bushes is a famous spot among the tourist staying in luxury resorts. Don’t forget your snorkeling equipment to see an amazing underworld! Sun umbrellas, towels, and water are included.

    Hangnaameedhoo picnic island

    Picnic island trip

Spend your day with your loved ones on an uninhabited small island. These islands are away from the local islands thus preserving their natural beauty. This is a half or full-day excursion, so lunch, water, and towel are included. There is a long reef nearby to explore as well.

    Hangnaameedhoo dream island

    Dream Island

This is one of the most beautiful uninhabited islands in this area. Travel time is around 30 mins. The uninhabited island where, for a day, you may feel like Robinson Crusoe. The house reef is full of colorful fishes, rays, and sharks.

What to choose: Picnic island trip, Sandbank, or Dream Island. The price for these trips varies from  90 to 105 AUD per person. As for me, I’d like to check each of them without spending too much. So the only option is the full-day trip that includes all these three islands.

    Hangnaameedhoo snorkeling

    Safari Snorkeling

Take a small boat trip to snorkel in one of the most beautiful reefs around the region. Swim with the fishes of so many different kinds. The excursion takes about an hour and a half. And you will visit at least 2 reefs.

Manta ray snorkeling. Manta Rays are inquisitive by nature and if you can control your excitement and remain still and not splash around, the rays will swim around you with tremendous elegance. The spot is rather far from Hangnaameedhoo, so the trip costs 200 AUD per person. If you want to see mantas, you should go to Ukulhas, Dhangethi, or Dharavandhoo.

    Hangnaameedhoo dolphins

    Dolphin Cruise

Can there be a more fascinating and beautiful experience during your tropical holiday than watching dozens of playful dolphins in the light of the setting Sun? Take a great shot of those graceful creatures while they are spinning or doing other acrobatics. This activity is not cheap as well – 150 AUD per person. It’s because you have to take a 30-40 min trip to a possible spot location (possible because they are wild animals and swim wherever they like).

    Hangnaameedhoo fishing

    Sunset fishing

A line and some bait are all you need to participate in the sunset fishing experience. Catch one if you can, and the hotel chef will be delighted to prepare it to your liking. The excursion takes about two hours by dhoni. Even if you are not lucky to catch a fish, the hotel chef will cook some they have.

    Other activities

Whale shark trip. Swimming alongside the largest fish in the sea is one of the ultimate bucket-list experiences. But the spot is near Sun Island Resort and the inhabited island Dhigurah. So the trip will take a full day and cost 220 AUD per person (in Dhigurah it’s  100 AUD per person).

Resort day visit. A few nearby resorts are open for a day visit. The package includes transfer, lunch, and resort facilities (pool, towel, entrance to bars). The price starts from 180 AUD per person.

    Hangnaameedhoo infrastructure

    Hangnaameedhoo Infrastructure

There are two schools, a Magistrate court, a health center 24/7, a pharmacy, a dockyard, a playground, shops & groceries, souvenir shops, cafes, police, a mosque, and a football field on the island. Walking on the island you will find local shops to buy some stuff and local craft shops to buy genuine “Made in the Maldives” wood carving and lacquer works. One dive center is located on Hangnaameedhoo.

    Where to eat

Continental breakfast (sausages, eggs, toast, butter, cheese, jam, chocolate spread, national Maldivian dish – Mas Huni Roshi is fresh roses with tuna, coconut, and onion stuffing, very tasty, some fruit, water, and drink.

For lunch and dinner, you will be offered local curry, pasta, rice with vegetables.

If you’d like to try local restaurants, check the below list:

Pilot whale cafe’. Various types of food are available here. take some time to make your order, so have to wait with a little bit of patience.

Cafe El Clasico. A very local style place. Good price and tasty food, but it takes some time to prepare.

Two Leaf Garden Restaurant. Really delicious food and quick service.

Food Place. Tea/coffee place with local snacks.

To be honest, I don’t know why reviews for cafes on this island are so bad. From my experience the vast majority of local restaurants serve nice food, but with slow service. I assume, guests expect high-quality service like on a luxury resort, but it’s a local island. Don’t expect high standards, just enjoy your meal and the local atmosphere.
