    Thinadhoo Travel Guide

Thinadhoo is one of the five inhabited islands of the atoll Vaavu. It is located 78 km south of Male. Next to the island are Felidhoo and Keyodhoo. The total popuation is around 250 people. It has increased over the last 10 years due to the tourism boom on the island. Do not mess up this island with another Thinadhoo located in the atoll Gaafu Dhaalu – in the south (ie, further south) of the Maldives.

    Things to do in Thinadhoo

    Beach and house reef

Despite its rather small size, Thinadhoo can boast one of the best bikini beaches in Maldives. The beach is really nice: no dead corrals on the beachside where you enter the ocean. The house reef surrounding the island is gorgeous which makes Thinadhoo one of the prettiest places in the Maldives.

You can easily find shade under the palms and relax on one of the sunbeds. Thick vegetation creates plenty of private and enclosed places where you can enjoy your privacy.

Sunset views from the island’s western side are especially stunning, with uninterrupted ocean horizons.

The house reef of Thinadhoo is nice but full of dead corals. There are plenty of fish and some colorful corals. You won’t get enough of it even if you’ve been snorkeling for several days. The most interesting part of the reef, as usual, is on the edge. The easiest way to explore the reef is while drifting along with the current without any movement.

It’s possible to spot sharks, rays and turtles as well.

    Snorkeling safaris

Sea turtles, clownfish, scorpionfish, and a great variety of colorful tropical fish can be easily spotted by snorkeling, both starting from Thinadhoo beach, the reef is easily accessible from the shore.

If you’re tired of snorkeling around the island you can visit one of the closest outside reefs. Not to say that night snorkeling with sharks is definitely a must! That point is near Alimatha Resort, you can enjoy the company of nurse sharks which are completely safe and friendly for humans. There you can meet around 20-30 sharks! Isn’t that impressive?

    >> Check our Thinadhoo Tours here <<

The diving should be described in particular. In the “shark” place mentioned above, it’s possible to dive as well. The only problem is the number of divers – there were a lot of them! So it’s better to wait until the very end when all of the divers have ascended. Because, in a while, dozens of sharks appeared from nowhere all the way around so that was really unforgettable experience.

    Shipwreck snorkeling

The Keyodhoo shipwreck is one of the most interesting snorkeling spots near Thinadhoo. It’s easy to reach and great for all levels. The wreck sits in shallow water and is covered in coral, with lots of fish—like clownfish, swimming around it. Snorkeling here feels a bit like exploring an underwater playground, and it’s a fun change from the usual reef spots. Just a short boat ride away, it’s a must-see if you’re in the area.

Like all wrecks, Healthy corals and schools of fish call this wreck home, among them are table corals and clownfish.

You can swim through the captain’s cabin and hold onto that iconic bicycle attached to the hull for a picture.

The wreck is only 15 mins from Thinadhoo and can be a part of a trip of island hopping to Keyodhoo.

The spot might be busy since boats not only from local islands, but also from safari boats are coming here.

    thinadhoo sandbank

    Uninhabited islands and sandbanks

Ambara Island. About one hour trip from Thinadhoo, there is the uninhabited Ambara Island, with a beautiful coral reef, a low seabed, it has a vast variety of marine life.

Bodumohara Island. A deserted island for those who love to relax in crystal clear waters with a beautiful and low seabed. After the marvelous snorkeling, there will be lunch on a table dug directly in the sand.

Sandbanks. This beautiful sandbank is perfect for admiring the colors that you have hardly seen before. It is surrounded by very low waters for several kilometers, it is always deserted and it guarantees absolute privacy. During clear days the seawater offers incredible shades of blue.

Other things to do include water sports, dolphin watching, and night fishing.

    thinadhoo-vaavu-atoll

    Thinadhoo scuba diving

Vaavu Atoll is a true geographical wonder. It is a boot-shaped atoll and the ‘toe’, Fotteyo Muli is the easternmost point of the Maldives archipelago.

Vaavu Atoll boasts Fotteyo Falhu – the largest unbroken barrier reef in the Maldives. The reef is 50 km long and the easternmost point of the Maldives archipelago. One of the features of this diving area is the deep channels known as Kandus that bring in fast-flowing currents full of nutrients.

Golden Wall features several vertical walls, caves, and overhangs. Along the exterior of the reef, the wall is covered with yellow sponges and is teeming with colorful reef fish. Caves and overhangs full of pink, green, yellow soft corals hang to make it so easy to just get lost in the beauty of the dive.

    Fotteyo Kandu

    Depth: 10-30m
    Current: Medium to strong
    Visibility: 10-20m
    What to see: reach diversity

A vast array of marine life that can be found here, as well as a wide variety of colorful soft and hard corals, make this dive unforgettable. If diving early in the morning, divers have a chance to see eagle rays triggerfish, potato groupers, grey reef sharks, schools of white trevally, tuna, barracuda, surgeonfish, swordfish, as well as turtles and some other creatures. The site is so big that you have to do at least 3 dives!

There are only two dive centers on the island. One of them is owned by Plumeria Boutique Hotel and the other — Blue Horizon.

    thinadhoo-drone

    Thinadhoo Infrastructure

The island is divided into two parts: a village in which 1фкщгтв 250 people are officially registered. There are very few local islands where you can see a situation like that. Between the village and the bikini beach stretches the jungle. And almost no rubbish. It’s clean and well-maintained. The road to the beach takes 5-7 minutes of walking.

Only a couple of shops, two dive centers, and a café you can find on the island. Surprisingly, there are 7 guest houses (mostly for Italians) and a hotel, Plumeria Maldives, where Eastern Europeans usually spend their holidays. There’s no school, stadium, or hospital on the island.

    Where to eat on Thinadhoo

Most of the guests staying in Thinadhoo have their meals in hotels, as there are only two places to eat outside.

Le Bois Cherry. The only restaurant in Thinadhoo. Cute and cozy, the chef is very good, the food is tasty and you have a lot of options like Maldivian, Indian, Italian etc.

    >> Check our Thinadhoo Tours here <<

Fini Chaka Chaka. A great restaurant right on the beach. That is, they cook in the restaurant as indicated on the map, and the tables are on the beach. For an island, the prices are fair. The fresh juices—especially mango and passion fruit—were really tasty, and the homemade coconut ice cream was very good too. The staff were always friendly and helpful. The only downside is that it opens at 11:30, so you can’t go there for breakfast. There aren’t many mosquitoes either, thanks to the nice ocean breeze.

  • Fulhadhoo Island

    Fulhadhoo Island

The island of Fulhadhoo is administratively a part of Baa Atoll but geographically separated from it. The distance to Male is around 100 km. Next to it are 2 more inhabited islands: Fehendhoo and Goidho. The remoteness of this place from the main tourist islands makes these places truly wild.

About 100-150 inhabitants live on the island. There is a newly built harbor for speedboats and big boats.

Some local shops, football grounds, a mosque.

    Things to do in Fulhadhoo

    West Beach

West Beach is one of the few places on Fulhadhoo where you can wear a bikini, since it is a local island with modest dress rules elsewhere. The beach is easy to reach by foot or by bicycle, and it’s big enough that even when other visitors are around, it still feels private. The beach is equipped with several places with sunbeds, where you can comfortably sunbathe.

One of the best parts? At low tide, a little sandbank appears offshore (on the west) — great for photos or just standing in the middle of the sea, soaking in the view. Sunsets here are also amazing.

    White Sandy Beach

White Sandy Beach was one of the most peaceful, stunning beaches in Maldives. It’s exactly what you imagine when you think of a quiet island escape — powdery white sand, swaying palms, and incredibly clear, turquoise water.

What stood out most was how quiet it was. No crowds, no noise — just the sound of the waves and the occasional breeze through the trees. You can spent hours just walking the shoreline, swimming in the calm lagoon, and snorkeling straight from the beach (but coral reef is kinda far). The water is shallow and crystal-clear.

If you’re looking for somewhere to completely relax, disconnect, and enjoy nature without the resort scene, White Sandy Beach is absolutely worth it. Fulhadhoo felt like a hidden gem — and this beach is its crown jewel.

    East Beach

East Beach is where the island truly feels local—mostly visited by residents, especially in the late afternoon. It’s quiet, peaceful, and a great place to soak up everyday island life. You can’t wear bikinis on this beach. Just around 50-60 years ago, locals were walking to Goidhoo to get a transfer to another atoll or Male as it was the only way.

    House reef

In the western part of the island, there is a rather beautiful , which is best explored during high tide. But do not forget about the current, which in this place can be quite strong. In the northern part, it’s not strong. Perfect for children! The reef is known for its healthy coral formations and excellent visibility, especially during high tide. You can see colorful schools of reef fish, graceful sea turtles, reef sharks, and even rays gliding through the clear waters.

Behind the reef, 50m stretch of one of its sandbanks, of which there are 5 in these places (plus a private uninhabited island, which can only be visited by obtaining permission and paying some fee).

Sandbank visiting and uninhabited island visits

Two of the most unforgettable experiences in Fulhadhoo are the Sandbank Picnic and Uninhabited Island Visits. The sandbank trip takes you to a stunning patch of pure white sand surrounded by crystal-clear water — perfect for swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, and snapping dreamy photos. Most guesthouses offer half- or full-day packages that include snacks or a picnic lunch.

For something even more remote, you can visit an uninhabited island like Innafushi. These trips usually include a beach BBQ or packed lunch, snorkeling, and hours of quiet time on a completely empty island. Access is arranged through local hosts, who handle the permits and logistics.

    Safari snorkeling

It is a half- or full-day boat trip that takes you to multiple reef sites around the island. You’ll snorkel vibrant coral gardens, spot turtles, rays, reef sharks, and swim through schools of tropical fish.

One of the top spots is Coral Garden. Located about 800m west of Fulhadhoo, this dense coral cluster is best reached by boat. The garden is home to massive coral plates and abundant fish species—definitely a highlight of marine safaris in the area. The garden is home to massive coral plates and abundant fish species—definitely a highlight of marine safaris in the area.

Another famous spot is Fish Point. It is one of the top snorkeling spots near Fulhadhoo, located next to Innafushi Island. Known for its massive coral formations—some the size of small buildings—it offers an incredible underwater landscape teeming with marine life.

You can encounter schools of tropical fish, reef sharks, and especially friendly batfish that may swim right alongside you (they like bubbles!).

And the last remarkable spot is Manta ray site. Seasonal outings to manta hotspots in the eastern lagoon, offering opportunities to swim alongside these majestic creatures. Manta season in Fulhadhoo runs from April to November, particularly around new and full moons due to the highest and  lowest tides which bring a lot of plankton.

The restaurant’s relaxed beachfront location and warm hospitality—especially from staff like Mr. Hazim—create a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere ideal for casual dinners or relaxed lunches by the sea. But meanwhile, a few guests have complained about food quality.

Kaage – Pool Club. A chic pool-side eatery at Island Luxury Dive Hotel, KAAGE Pool Club serves up a diverse menu of pizzas, seafood, and international dishes in a relaxed, scenic setting. Guests rave about the friendly, caring staff, good value, and laid-back ambiance—perfect for lunch or dinner by the pool.

    – Local beach

    – Tourist beach, or bikini beach

    mathiveri-mathiveri-sting-beach

    Stingray beach

This beach got its name because of the stingrays, which can be seen here throughout the daylight hours. But the best time is in the early morning because they come very close to shore. In this case, you don’t need to go into the water.

These stingrays are dangerous to humans because they can sting! This is usually due to being stepped on. They have a habit of burrowing in the sand, so they are not visible. But generally, they are fearful. In addition to the rays, there are young sharks.

As the name suggests, this is the best beach on the island to watch the sunset. It’s located on the western side of the island and is a quiet and secluded spot with beautiful views of the ocean.

    Local beach

A picnic island is located near the beach. You can get there swimming. But you should be careful! Well on the way to the island, there is a strong current that changes every hour.

The strongest current is in the afternoon; it’s getting lower in the morning and in the evening. Some time ago this part of the beach was bigger, but because of the activity of locals the shores began to get washed away, and the sand was washed into the channel.

The sand is white there without dead corals as it washed away into the channel. In the evening you can swim there and enjoy the sunset.

    bikini-beach

    Bikini beach

Located on the eastern side of the island, Bikini Beach is a designated area for tourists to sunbathe and swim without wearing traditional Islamic clothing. The beach is secluded and has calm waters, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling and swimming.

The island has a private beach for tourists where you can swim in a bikini. The water is not very deep, so the island is suitable for families with children.

    mathiveri-house-reef

    House reef

The house reef is easily accessible from the shore, making it an excellent option for both experienced and novice snorkelers. You can simply wade into the water from the beach, and within minutes, you will be surrounded by a plethora of marine life. The visibility is generally excellent, allowing you to appreciate the underwater scenery.

    Fishing on Mathiveri

Like any other Maldives island, Mativeri is rich in reef fish. The main type of fishing – is reel, cargo, and fishing line with a hook. You can catch fish up to 2 kg. However, there is not so simple. After the fish got hooked, it can swim in corals, and pulling it out will be difficult, so the fishing line is torn and you are left with nothing. • Dhiffushi Island

    Dhiffushi Island

Dhiffushi is a part of Kaafu Atoll. It is located 36,6 km northeast of Male, the capital of Maldives. Another inhabited island of Thulusdhoo is situated just 8 km south of Dhiffushi. The island itself is small (just like the majority of inhabited islands); its size is 950 m x 200 m. Approximately 1200 people live in this little paradise. More and more locals are getting engaged in travel industry, but fishing still remains one of their major activities.

    Table of content:

    Things to do in Dhiffushi

    Beach and house reef

There are two bikini beaches on the island – one on the northern part of the island, a small one, and the other on the opposite side of the island.

    Check: Budget tours to Maldives

The first beach has rather a good entry to the water and the sand is nice. But the channel leading to the deck is at about 10 m so you should be careful with the running boats. Each guest house owns its lounge chairs and umbrellas. The length of this beach is around 50-70 m only.

    dhiffushi-beach-view

However, they don’t surround it with a fence and the locals can also come to the beach. You may sunbathe in a bikini on this beach (but there are still signs prohibiting that). The locals who use the beach are very tolerant of this rule.

The second beach is bigger, but not very clean – quite a lot of garbage. Most of it is garbage that brings the ocean to the island. During the low season, this problem is particularly relevant because of the western monsoon, which brings all the garbage to this part of the island.

Near the beach a lot of algae. Therefore, you need to go a little to the left to swim in clear water. There is shallow water, so the beach is suitable for families with children.

On the beach, many sunbeds and built artificial shadows. Despite this, the southern tip of the beach has a great reef for snorkeling, at the edges of which there are several living reefs.

Also, there is something like a sandbank, which is a bit hidden under the water at high tide.

Small white crabs are running everywhere on the beach, they don’t bite, but it’s very difficult to catch them!

After sunset, the light turns on, which attracts stingrays, small sharks, and fish. One of the few entertainments on the island in the evening.

Fishing is one of the best things to experience in Maldives. You don’t have to be a professional to fish in the Maldives. Reef Fishing on a traditional boat called ‘Dhoni’ is totally a unique and fulfilling experience. Using hand lines and bait, catch a red snapper for your lunch or dinner under the magical starlit sky. You can also enjoy your catch cooked or barbecued for you the way you like.

    Snorkeling safari

Snorkeling is a wonderful activity that can be enjoyed by almost anyone.  Most people who have snorkeled have done so only on group charters while on vacation, but snorkeling is an activity that can be done almost anytime, anywhere.

Dhiffushi Island has many beautiful snorkeling points, one of the famous spots is called ‘Turtle Point’ – where you will see turtles among different fishes and sea creatures. Baby Shark is a somewhat rare scene that is easy to be seen at the snorkeling point around this island.

Night snorkeling. Night snorkeling is a great opportunity to discover the nightlife of the ocean! The evening is when the reefs come alive and when you will see the colors of the reefs in their full splendor with corals opening up like flower gardens.

Enjoy a spectacular show of Dolphins playing around. Dolphins are one of the most social creatures, which enjoy the time they spend together with their playful behavior. Some of the dolphins are called Spinners, Jumpers, Rotators, and even back flippers.

Diving is also one of the most famous activities among travelers visiting Maldives. The Maldives is also ideal for Diving due to its high visibility, positive weather, featured creature,s and qualified training. There are 12 dive sites nearby, like Banana Reef, Lankan Beyru, Prisca corner, etc.

There are 3 PADI dive centers in Dhiffushi. So you have a choice.

    Resort Day Visit

A day visit to a nearby resort is the perfect opportunity to experience resort life. Depending on the package, guests will be able to enjoy meals, alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages, the beach & the pool. Indulge yourself in a drink at Resort Bar or use Swimming Pool to try something different.

Available resorts: Meeru Island Resort, Adaaran Hudhuranfushi, Cinnamon Dhonveli

As of Feb 2024, resort day visits are not allowed.

    Other activities on Dhiffushi

Beach Dinner. Spend the night of your lifetime at an exclusive table specially set up for you, with your toes in the sand, listening to the waves lapping the shore, while staring into the twinkling lights of Dhiffushi beach.

Surfing. Surfing in Dhiffushi is not so popular compared to Thulusdhoo or Himmafushi. It’s because of the remote location of surf spots. So, in any case, you have to hire a boat to go nearby.

Canoe. Indulge yourself with some adventure of exploring the lagoon and beauty beneath – all from just above the sea sitting in a canoe. You can’t ride to Meeru as it’s a private island resort, so you can’t anchor there.

    dhiffushi-street

    Dhiffushi infrastructure

You will find on the island a school, a mosque, a health center, a stadium, a couple of shops and cafés, several hotels, and plenty of Maldivian hammocks (“joali” in Dhivehi). There is no ATM in Dhiffushi.

In the case of an emergency, you’ll have to go to Male. That’s why make sure that you have taken everything you need with you in advance.

In most places, you can pay in US dollars, though you’ll receive change in either dollars or Maldivian Rufiyaas and won’t always have the choice to choose between the two.

    dhiffushi-local-beach

The island has three dive centers, the prices are quite high compared to other islands. The island itself is not for diving, so for this it is better to choose another place.

But there are 2 water sports centers: water ski, surfing, windsurfing, kayaks, etc. Good location for this, because there is no coral, the deep part is very close.

In general, despite some annoying, and unusual to us, it is very pleasant and friendly people. They love to talk about their island, what, where and how, were happened, they are interested in you and want to show themselves and their country from the best side. Most of them speak English very well.

    dhiffushi-faruma-restaurant

Disadvantages – sometimes it is very difficult to get rid of such an interlocutor. Perhaps this feature is inherent in the entire population of the region (Maldives, India, Sri Lanka).

Advantages – the service they have even in cheap hotels just at the highest level. We are ready to do everything for the sake of the client, always with a smile, always helpful, everyone will tell, show, there is not even talk about any rudeness.

Almost no garbage on the streets. There is an unspoken rule, according to which every resident is obliged to clean up the area around his house every day.

    Where to eat on Dhiffushi

Hotels’ restaurants provide a great variety of local and continental cousins.

One of the most popular restaurants on Dhiffushi is the Dhiffushi Inn Restaurant, which is known for its delicious Maldivian and international dishes. The restaurant offers a variety of seafood dishes, as well as pasta, rice, and noodle dishes, along with refreshing drinks and desserts. The restaurant has a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, making it a great place to unwind after a day of activities.

Another popular restaurant on the island is the Relax Inn Restaurant, which serves a variety of Maldivian and international cuisine. The restaurant offers a range of seafood dishes, as well as curries, sandwiches, and salads. The restaurant also has a rooftop seating area, providing beautiful views of the island and the ocean.

For those looking for a more upscale dining experience, the Island Breeze Restaurant is a great option. The restaurant serves a variety of seafood and international dishes, and has a more formal setting compared to other restaurants on the island.

Other restaurants and cafes on Dhiffushi include the Seashore Grill, which serves grilled seafood and meat dishes, and the Coconut Garden Restaurant, which offers Maldivian and international cuisine.

    Where to stay on Dhiffushi

There are a lot of places to stay, but I advise Araamu Holidays & Spa, and that’s why.

    – Sea view rooms;
    – Super friendly staff with experience working in resorts. So high-quality service is guaranteed;
    – Amazing in-house restaurant with a great variety of local and continental cuisine;
    – Unlimited coffee and tea;
    – SPA facilities;
    – In-house Water Sport Center;
    – Play Hall (Pool, air hockey, table football and many other indoor games)
    – Own 8 pax capacity speedboat for cruising and activities on nearby islands;
    – Affordable room prices
    – Free Airport meet and greet service;

In addition to its beautiful natural surroundings, Hanimadhoo is known for its traditional Maldivian culture and hospitality. Visitors to the island can experience local cuisine, music, and dance, as well as visit historic landmarks such as the Hanimadhoo Cemetery, which is believed to date back to the 14th century.

    Beaches

Hanimadhoo is known for its stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters, white sand, and a peaceful atmosphere. Some of the most popular beaches on the island include:

Hanimadhoo Beach. This is the main beach on the island, located on the western side. The beach is long and wide, with soft white sand and clear blue waters. It’s an ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing.

Utheemu Beach. This is a smaller beach located on the eastern side of the island, near the historical Utheemu Palace. The beach is less crowded than Hanimadhoo Beach and offers a peaceful setting with stunning views of the Indian Ocean.

Kuredu Beach. This beach is located on the neighboring island of Kuredu, which is accessible from Hanimadhoo via a short boat ride. Kuredu Beach is known for its long stretches of soft white sand, turquoise waters, and colorful marine life. It’s a great spot for snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing.

    Hanimaadhoo-view

    House reef

The house reef on Hanimadhoo is located on the eastern side of the island, and it is known for its diverse marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and rays. The reef is also home to various types of coral, including staghorn and table coral.

    Night Fishing

Night fishing for the most part is considered a sport for Maldivians, young and old. Your boat will leave just before the sunset to find a good spot near a reef. The crew will show you how to tie up hooks to lines and how to use sinkers. Once you catch enough to fill your barbecue grill, return back to the island and enjoy your fish by a bonfire.

    Hanimaadhoo-diving

    Scuba diving

The island is able to offer innumerable diving sites suitable for either beginner, more advanced, or expert divers with qualified multi-lingual PADI and SSI instructors. So whether you are a young diver, a family, a complete beginner, a single diver, a couple or a group of experienced divers, you’ve been invited to come and dive with a dive center to discover the amazing underwater world!

There are 15 dive sites open for divers.

    Other activities

Island hopping. You can visit nearby islands and explore their unique culture and traditions. You can also enjoy a picnic on a secluded island and relax on the pristine beaches.

Sunset Cruise: Enjoy the stunning sunset views while cruising on a traditional Maldivian boat called a dhoni. You can also spot dolphins and other marine life during the cruise.

The only disadvantage of this Maldivian paradise is the distance to Male. It’s approximately 300 km. So the only type of transfer is a domestic flight. But this remoteness can be made up for by the island’s nature, true solitude, and magnificent views.

    hanimadhoo-beach-1

    Hanimaadhoo infrastructure

Hanimaadhoo is a quiet fishing village with lots of tree shade and swings. Fishing and agriculture are what most of the 2500 inhabitants of the island do for work.

Apart from the international airport, there is a village on the island that occupies about 1/3 of the island. The population is 2,500 people. There is an ATM, a hospital, a school, a mosque, a post office, and a police station – in fact, they can be found on any inhabited island.

At the northern end of the island, a climate observatory is located. The data provided by the observatory is used not only for the weather forecast but also for monitoring climate changes in the region. This issue is very important in the Maldives, because sea level is rising, and soon (in 50 years or so) the majority of Maldivian islands can disappear underwater.

In recent years more and more people are moving to Hanimaadhoo from Hathifushi and Hondaidhoo. It is planned that this island will soon become an important tourist center of the northern province of Maldives.

There are only 5 guest houses and an eco-hotel on the island.

    Where to eat on Hanimaadhoo

Nana’s Kitchen. Great ice-cream shop on the island.

Dark Lobster Restaurant. Tasty food with great prices. Lobster is good as well.

Chill Time. Continental food is very good, it has to be emphasized that it does not bite because otherwise, it is inedible, recommended.

Simmer Ever Restaurant. Nice restaurant with a good selection of local and global dishes to choose from. They have free WiFi with good speed, too!

La Sorriso. If you need a good espresso, this is the place to come!

Youth Café. Local place with great variety of Maldivian food.

Athirimathi Hotaa. Tea and coffee place with shorts and snacks.

    Transfer to Hanimaadhoo

Because of its remoteness from Male the only kind of transfer to the island is a domestic flight. The price is around 140 usd/way.

    Travel time is 50 mins.

  • Himmafushi Travel Guide

    Himmafushi Travel Guide

Himmafushi island is a part of Kaafu Atoll. It is located just 17 km to the north of Male. Huraa and Thulusdhoo are situated a bit farther. The size of the island is 900 m x 750 m, and just 850 people live there. Not that many. It is a typical local island, which can be walked around in 40 minutes even if you walk at a snail’s pace.

The island was extended almost double in size, but a new area hasn’t been developed yet.

    Things to do in Himmafushi

    Bikini beach and house reef

Bikini beach is on the island’s northern tip near some guest houses. A short strip of sand with fringed coconut trees has not yet received the official status of a tourist beach, but this is the only place on the island where you can sunbathe and swim in a bikini.

There is no house reef near Himmafushi, so you have to take a snorkeling safari trip to do this activity.

    Surfing in Himmafushi

Himmafushi is a famous surfing destination in Maldives. Check below the most favorite surf points.

    Jailbreak

Himmafushi home break Jailbreak is just a five-minute walk away, free to paddle out any time of day. It’s named after the fact it’s right in front of jail and until recently it was actually illegal to surf there (as the entrance was on private property), but now it’s opened! It’s a perfect right-hander with three sections. Jailbreak offers waves from intermediate surfers to advanced surfers. On a good swell, you can ride along walls and tube sections.

    Sultans

Across the channel from jail this spot is for those who want something a bit bigger and challenging this is the spot and it’s certainly not one for beginners or low-end intermediates. Sultans is a fast (right-hander) wave creating two sections, the first peak mellow leading to the second. Both are perfect barrels giving a ride of around 200 m. Although usually crowded, it’s quite deep and this makes it more of a competitive surf.

    Honkys

Honkys is a left-hand point break opposite of Sultans. The first peak is pretty mellow but jacks up into the second section with a height almost double the first giving a long perfect ride.

    himmafushi surfing

    Ninjas

A slightly more mellow break (also referred to as Piddlers) Ninjas is one of the more beginner-friendly and longboard friendly waves in the area and is best surfed at 1 m and under and breaks much slower than most of the waves in the area. The break is named Ninjas because of the many Japanese surfers who like to surf it. It is accessible 20-25 minutes from Himmafushi by boat.

    Cockes

One of the most famous surf breaks in the Maldives this right-hander is very similar to Jailbreaks actually, although slightly faster on the right swell. The wave’s name is due to the Coca-Cola factory nearby on the island of Thulusdhoo. So you have to hire a private speedboat to go there.  Works best with winds from south and northeast.

    Chickens

This wave holds swell sizes from 1m to well over 3m and provides rides up to 500m long. This is a long left-hand wave with 2 sections where you can easily get barrels on the last section of the wave. The name of this wave is due to the poultry farm that exists on the island, and not due to surfers’ reaction to high swells! It’s a 30 min ride by speedboat, near Thulusdhoo local island.

    Pasta Point and Lohis

These are private surf points that are available for guests staying on Cinnamon Dhonveli and Adaaran Hudhuranfushi only.

    himmafushi snorkeling

    Snorkeling safari near Himmafushi

Clear, warm water and diverse marine life make snorkeling in the Maldives one of the best places in the world. The countless reefs throughout the atolls each offer a unique experience. Some lagoons are even so close to shore that a few kicks and strokes and you’re swimming amidst the friendly fish, harmless sharks and shy rays. The reefs all over the Maldives are inhabited by various kinds of aquatic flora and fauna and are great for a relaxing day watching fish on the reef.

    night fishing

    Night fishing

The surrounding reefs of Himmafushi are abundant with game fishes like trevallies, snappers, and groupers. But you can try line fishing and check your luck trying to catch some fish for dinner. Lulling waves and the amazing starscape of the night sky accompany you on a memorable night fishing trip. You can ask your hotel to cook it on a grill.

    himmafushi diving

    Scuba diving

Although scuba diving around Himmafushi isn’t as great as diving on Rasdhoo, Dhangethi, or Fulidhoo. But there are still plenty of dive sites to explore in the area and the island has a couple of well-established PADI dive centers (such as Feena Dive) that will show you the underwater world.

    himmafushi island

    Himmafushi Infrastructure

There are no ATMs on the island, so make sure that you have got cash (ruffiyaas or USD). Credit cards are accepted at guest houses, but they charge a 4% fee for processing.

There are several groceries (for example, a large bottle of water costs just $1, fruit and vegetables – $0,1-$2), and gift shops available on the island. You can have a meal at two small restaurants; there you can try dishes of local cuisine.

Here are some prices on dishes at restaurants:

    a large bottle of water – $1,5;
    drinks – $1,5;
    Lavazza coffee – $2 (coffee there is not of the best quality);
    a burger/sandwich – $2,5;
    noodles – $2,5 – $4;
    rice & fish – $3 – $10.

You can also buy fish from the locals and ask to cook it at a guest house. The prices are ok, but they want to charge more from tourists rather than from locals, that’s why you should ask a menu with all the prices listed.

    himmafushi food

    Where to eat on Himmafushi

Outside the guest houses, in the village there are some restaurants, if you want to know the real tastes of Maldivian cuisine, especially some of the post-dinner snacks cooked deep-fried, known as ‘khedika’.

Oevaru. Tuna, pasta with seafood, curry everything was tasty. Serves both western foods (sandwiches, burgers). Good price for good food. Could not complain very modest and friendly!

Anmadey Cafe’. Very local style cafe in Himmafushi. Good tuna fish rice. Big serving and satisfying…go for the local Maldivian dishes. Skip the western stuff. The fish and chips, and grilled tuna look rather pitiful

Sea Breeze Cafe. Another local-style cafe with Maldivian food and snacks. Management is friendly and really kind. If the place is full it’s possible that serving time gets longer.

  • Resort or Local Island in Maldives. What to choose?

Resort or Local Island in Maldives. What to choose?

What is the best choice to spend your perfect time in the Maldives: resort or local island?

Everyone knows that the Maldives is a paradise for privacy, with insanely beautiful views, a snow-white beach and the azure ocean. It attracts with its remoteness from the outside world and its accessibility is not for everyone.

Not everyone could afford to get holidays in this amazing corner of the planet for many years. The average cost of such a holiday began from $ 1,500 for a couple for 4 nights. Is it worth it?

Until 2008, there were no other options, so the Maldives remained a very closed resort. Only occasionally do ordinary tourists visit the local islands in search of exotic and the opportunity to plunge into the real, wild and unexplored Maldives.

But everything changed with new government and the change of laws in relation to ordinary Maldivians – they were allowed to open their own tourism business on local islands. From that moment, the era of affordable, cheap, and most importantly, quite high-quality holidays in the Maldives began.

You can argue endlessly about where it is better – a local island or resort. Therefore, all the main pros, cons and similar features of relaxation on local islands and at the resort will be described below.

    Advantages of local islands

Local islands in the Maldives are the inhabited islands on which the locals live. The population of such islands is from 500 to 2500 people. Sizes: length from 500 to 2000 m, width about the same. It is not by chance that the emphasis is placed on these figures, later we will explain why.

    maldives turtle

There are about 200 inhabited islands in the Maldives. On a hundred of them, there is a tourist cluster (at least one guest house). And on about 40, the infrastructure is quite developed, including a jetty, several guest houses, cafes, and restaurants, a tourist beach, and diving centers. Consider the main advantages of such islands.

    Cost of living

Of course, the main thing is the cost of living. It ranges from $ 30 to $ 150 per night, depending on the hotel and the season.

How to choose a local island in the Maldives?

Guesthouses in the Maldives are small hotels with 4-12 rooms. At the same time, the quality of the rooms is at a fairly high level: in each room, you have air conditioning, a toilet with a shower, a table and chairs, and sometimes a minibar. The rooms themselves are clean, well-maintained, and furnished with new furniture.

    resort vs local island-area

Of course, the cost of living is much higher than in neighboring India or Sri Lanka. But do not forget that the country imports almost everything: fuel, building materials, food, clothes, etc. In addition to this, there are also taxes on tourism activities. Owners of guesthouses add to these expenses not a significant profit.

Tourism is almost the only source of income for most Maldivians.

Restaurants and guesthouses mainly serve continental and Maldivian cuisine. The main products that use are rice, pasta, vegetables, beef, chicken, fish, spices [many spices], as well as marine inhabitants: lobster, crabs, and octopuses.

    eagle rays

It is worth recognizing that the dishes are not very diverse. Therefore, do not consider local islands from this point of view.

However, the portions are really huge and quite satisfying. It costs lunch from $ 10 per person.

    Transfer

One of the main features of the Maldives is the movement between the islands. Given that the distance between the northernmost and southernmost atolls is about 1200 km, then this is really a problem.

To date, a public ferry runs between all the inhabited islands, the cost of which does not exceed $ 10 one way. The main problem is that they run strictly according to a certain schedule and there are times when they are canceled for weather or other reasons. The second disadvantage is the travel time: from 1 to 12-15 hours.

Therefore, private boats (scheduled speedboats), which add to the public transfer between the islands, are a good alternative. The cost of the trip in this case is $ 10-80.

    resort vs local island-beach

Guesthouses can arrange a private speedboat, but its cost will be $ 200 per trip.

For comparison: you can be delivered to resorts either on the hotel speedboat (from $ 90 per person in both ways), on a seaplane (from $ 360 in both ways), or on a domestic airline + speedboat (from $ 230 per person in both ways).

    locals

    Local culture

If you go to the Maldives not only for the beach and the sun but also to get acquainted with the culture and tradition of the locals, then the local islands will not disappoint you in this regard!

Maldivians are very friendly people with their own traditions and culture. Despite the fact that they are Muslims, outwardly they almost don’t show it. Of course, there are some rules that should be followed when you are going to the local islands. But they will not cause you any significant inconvenience.

At the same time, pagan traditions that have appeared thanks to the African influence of the past times are still present on the islands.

On the local islands, you have the opportunity to see the real Maldives – without chic and frills. And the locals will be happy to help with this (they like to talk, just give them a reason).

    The shops

On any inhabited island, there are several restaurants, groceries, and souvenir shops. There is one interesting feature – you should take off your shoes before entering the store.

In shops, you can buy a wide variety of products that can’t be found in the guesthouse. Similar shops on the resorts are simply absent. If we talk about souvenirs, they are much cheaper on local islands than in resorts.

    Resort advantages

Resorts or island hotels are separate islands, the territory of which is occupied by one hotel. The size of such islands is usually much smaller than the size of the local islands.

The main feature of the resorts is a bungalow – private villas that are located either on the beach or on the water (with a higher price of course). The villa is equipped with everything you need: a bathroom, air conditioning, minibar, etc. In addition, the island usually has fitness centers, bars, restaurants, spa centers, diving centers, and water sports centers.

Transfer to the island is carried out by seaplane, speedboat, and domestic flights (with the following delivery to the island by speedboat).

The number of rooms depends on the size of the island. Usually in the range from 100 to 200. For comparison, a guest house on local islands usually has 3-10 rooms.

In total, there are about 130 resort islands in the Maldives. And every year 3-7 new ones open.

    resort areal

    Privacy

One of the main reasons why people go to Maldives is privacy. And the local islands will not be able to fully enjoy this feeling. This is especially important for young couples. Therefore, your own bungalow is a great place to completely renounce the world and enjoy peace and tranquility.

The very small size of the island, plus its remoteness (not many resorts are located next to local islands) creates that uniqueness of separation from the outside world.

On the local islands, it’s still a little crowded and it will not be easy to find privacy.

    Villa

Without a doubt, your own villa is the undoubted advantage of resorts, without which a resort is not a resort. As mentioned earlier, Maldivian bungalows are fully furnished villas located either on land or on water. Moreover, those who have a glass floor on the water [not all] through which you can watch the underwater world of the Maldives, and he is simply amazing!

The area of such a villa is really impressive from 55 to 1300 m2! The cost of a bungalow starts on average from $ 130 per night (including all taxes and fees, in the low season). But at the same time, you get at your disposal a beautiful view of the ocean and a chic villa!

    resort vs local island-sun

    Bars and entertainment

In the Maldives, there are no separate areas for large concerts or something like that. One of the reasons is religion, under the influence of which the adoption of certain laws takes place. Also, there are no clubs on the islands.

But all this does not apply to resorts where nightlife is boiling! There are bars, karaoke, restaurants, open-air discos, and entertainment programs of your choice. Every evening you have the opportunity to have a great time with a glass of wine and dance to modern music.

It should be noted that only at resorts alcohol is absolutely legal and accessible to everyone (above 18 y.o). For some people, it’s a decisive factor when choosing an island: resort or local. On local islands, and in the country as a whole, the consumption of alcohol is prohibited.

    The value

The price you pay for the resort is fully justified. This is an indisputable fact. After all, the island is completely privately owned, and the staff will do everything to make you happy and come back again and again.

Perfect cleanliness of the beach, the bottom with no sharp remains of dead corals, well-groomed paths, and lots of greenery await you at the resort. There are no signs of negligence or trash on the island. Cleanliness and order in everything. But it is worth noting that this depends on the resort.

At the same time, you understand that all this requires constant attention, care, and funds to maintain. Resorts are a great place to relax, where you get what you paid for.

    resort vs local island-water

What is common between a local island and a resort?

Despite the obvious differences and advantages of both resorts and local islands, there are quite a lot of similarities between them. Taking all this into account, you can make a choice: local island or resort.

    Ocean and sun

Yes, exactly, the most obvious similarity is the same water and the same sun. The color, temperature, and purity of the water are one and the same, whether it is a resort or an ordinary local island. In this case, there is always a chance to stumble on floating debris during snorkeling.

In the Maldives, the sun is the same everywhere. The Maldivian sun is merciless, you need to be careful with it because you can easily sunbathe, do not forget about sunscreen.

    resort vs local island-1

    Beach

The excellent condition of the beaches at the resorts has already been mentioned. What about the local islands? In general, not so bad. On most local islands, the tourist beach is constantly cleaned and kept in order. Not as perfect as at the resorts, but still they try.

But still, it is worth saying that the size of the beach [and its presence on the island] may vary from island to island. Therefore, in this case, tourists are taken to neighboring uninhabited islands, where beaches are specially equipped for tourists.

Also, there is still a garbage problem on local islands. The authorities simply do not have time to export it in time and it accumulates. But on the local islands, things are changing very quickly and the problem with garbage is becoming less and less relevant. Many islands, such as Ukulhas, have already solved this problem.

    fishes

    Underwater world

Maldives’ underwater world is unique and inimitable in many respects. Crystal clear water; many fish, sharks, stingrays; colorful corals make this place unforgettable!

Many local islands boast an excellent house reef, where you can meet not only fish but also larger representatives of marine fauna. Resorts have the same benefits.

Underwater inhabitants do not care where to swim: whether it is a resort or a local island. Therefore, the same fish, stingrays, and sharks.

    maldives boat

    Activities

In the Maldives, there are a lot of water activities, both underwater (snorkeling and diving) and on the surface (jet ski, boat trips, surfing, etc.). Moreover, if we talk about diving or snorkeling, then tourists from local islands and resorts are taken to the same places. It is obvious that this rule only applies if the resort and the local island are located in the neighborhood.

As for safari with dolphins, fishing, surfing, etc., the Resort provides a wider choice of activities than in the guest houses.

But with a price, resorts have been losing for a long time, guesthouses on local islands are easier with this and they can flexibly set prices for excursions and provide additional bonuses that are not included in the price.

Nevertheless, if you book a resort through agents (such as Islandii), you can get discounts and other special offers. At the same time, the total cost is lower than at Booking.

    What to choose?

The main advantages of local islands and resorts were considered.

We found out that they have similar features and their own characteristics.

The final choice is yours, as it depends on many factors. And last but not least from financials.

The purpose of the trip is what you should pay attention to when choosing between a resort and a local island.

If you wish (and most importantly opportunities), try visiting both the resort and the local island – you will not regret it.

  • Thoddoo Island

    Thoddoo Island

I have visited Thoddoo 4 times in the last 5 years. Not so regularly visit it, unlike Rasdhoo or Ukulhas. But in recent years it has become super popular among tourists from Europe.

Check: Budget packages to local islands

The island is located 67 km west of the capital Male. And 20 km north of the administrative center of North Ari Atoll – Rasdhoo. Thoddoo is a fairly large island by Maldivian standards – about 2 x 1 km. Moreover, a third of the island is reserved for farms, another third is the village, and the rest is the jungle. The population of the island is about 1400 people. Thoddoo is considered one of the largest producers of agricultural products in the country and is mainly known for its sweet watermelons.

Unlike many other islands, it is located as if separately.

    Things to do in Thoddoo

    Beach and snorkeling

Due to its size, Thoddoo offers magnificent beaches for tourists. Nowadays, there are two tourist beaches on the island located on opposite sides of the island.

Interesting fact: even in spite of its size, both tourist beaches are smaller in total than the beach in Ukulhas.

    thoddoo

The first beach is located in the southern part of the island. It takes about 15 min from the nearest hotel to reach, the path passes through fruit farms. A great option, in this case, is a bicycle. Almost every hotel provides it.

The boundaries of the beach are conventionally marked by a fence of dry palm leaves. The beach is very clean and well maintained, but small. During high season it can be crowded. Therefore, everyone lacks sun loungers and hammocks (unlike Ukulhas, where there are many more). It’s very convenient to have a shower and toilet on the beach as well.

Tropical trees grow along the coast, through which numerous paths lead to the water. However, there is only one entrance to bikini beach. The sand itself is so white and you can walk on it without fear of cutting yourself on glass or dead coral. The water is clean and with almost no floating debris.

    thoddoo-beach-area

Thoddoo house reef is very long. However, there are not so many places for snorkeling. A small reef is located very close to the bikini beach. there are only a couple of corals and several species of fish. A truly beautiful reef with many fish (and even stingrays and sharks) is located off the coast – about 400 m.

I swam there without fins and don’t recommend it because you get tired while you swim back and forth. And if there is also a side stream, then spend all your energy while you swim to the reef. But it worth it. At the same time, from my own experience, I’d say the outer reef is not as rich with animals and fish kingdom as Rasdhoo. But corals are in better condition.

Never swim there alone! The currents can be very strong and you will not notice how quickly you move away from the coast!

    thoddoo-island-beach

The second beach is located in the north-eastern part – behind the stadium. From some hotels, it’s only 5 minutes walk. It’s smaller than the south beach, but there are also not so many tourists. There are sunbeds, hammocks for a comfortable stay. The advantage of this beach is the closeness of a house reef, which is only 200 m away. At the edge of the reef, I saw turtles, eagles, and even manta rays! But not so many fish and sharks.

They say that on the beach you can see the fluorescent plankton! Unfortunately, I’ve never seen it, but I saw it at Rasdhoo and Adaaran Vaddhoo Resort.

    Cycling

The island is quite large and it will take a time to explore it on foot. Therefore, a good way is cycling. During morning or evening time you can easily go around the island and see what it is outside of the tourist beach.

Like other local islands, wildlife on Thoddoo is not very diverse. On the shore, there are many crabs and hermit crabs of various sizes. I saw how hermit crabs used a coconut shell, glass bottom, a bottle cap. In general, what they find is used as a home.

    thoddoo-island

You can find gray herons on the beach sometimes. If she likes you, she will let you step closer. When it gets dark, you can see flying foxes sweep overhead. They are not dangerous to humans and eat fruits. From reptiles – small iguanas and very small geckos.

Well, mosquitoes, which are quite a lot on Thoddoo (depending on the season), unlike the neighboring Rasdhoo. Therefore, stock up on repellents. Most of them are near plantations, and not everywhere, but only in some places.

    thoddoo-snork

    Snorkeling safari

There are two places for safari snorkeling: near Thoddoo and at Rasdhoo Atoll. In the first case, you will snorkel with turtles on a house reef. In the second case – visit three spots in Rasdhoo Atoll. What to choose? I would recommend both options because in this case, you will see how diverse and amazing the underwater world of the Maldives is.

Manta ray snorkeling. Mantas are the largest rays on the planet. The span of their wings can reach 6m! They feed only on plankton, so you shouldn’t scarry about it. There is a cleaning station near Thoddoo, where mantas come. I was snorkeling and diving there. The second option is better because mantas prefer to swim in deep water.

    thoddoo-island-farm

    Local farm tour

Such entertainment you can provide by yourself or find a local who will tell you and show everything, or ask a manager at the hotel. A vegetable farm tour will surprise you with the possibilities of growing herbs and vegetables in the atolls, and you will stock greens and herbs for your favorite salad. Thoddoo is one of the few islands in the Maldives that export fruits and vegetables to other islands. Papaya, watermelons, bananas, coconuts, etc. are growing here. If you want to pick fruits from trees, please, firstly ask permission from the locals.

    thoddoo-mantas

    Other activities

Dolphin safari. An evening safari with a school of friendly dolphins that swim so close to the boat that you can try to touch them!

Visit uninhabited islands. They are next to Rasdhoo. Madivaru is a picnic island neighboring a white sandbank. Surrounded by the blue sea Madivaru sandbank is the best place for relaxing.

Night fishing. The Maldives is the place where everyone can try to catch fish using only the fishing line, hook, and bait. Moreover, it is often ladies and children who are more successful than gents! Fish can be grilled at the hotel.

    thoddoo-fish

    Scuba diving

Two dive centers are now open on the island. I highly recommend everyone to try diving in the Maldives (no matter which island) because, after that, your thoughts about the underwater world will change forever! The beginner’s course includes theory class, skill training in shallow water, and the dive itself with an instructor. Price is 110 USD

If you are a certified diver, then I will disappoint you – all places for diving are in Rasdhoo Atoll. Therefore, if you have plans for diving, it’s better to take a few nights on Rasdhoo.

    Thoddoo Infrastructure

The island has everything you need: a hospital, a school and a kindergarten, a gym and a football field. Two large mosques, one of which was built long enough.

The island has several restaurants and cafes where you can try local courses. I wouldn’t say there is a huge price difference. More or less it’s the same. The food on Thoddoo, as well as on other local islands, is not very diverse. Rice, tuna, fried chicken, noodles with chicken, vegetables, etc.). Tuna and coconut milk soup. Pancakes with tuna and coconut. Casserole with tuna and rice, all kinds of tuna pies. And of course, a variety of fresh. On average, dinner costs $US 10-10 pp.

    farms

    Where to eat on Thoddoo

Where to eat: in a hotel or in restaurants? It depends on the hotel, if you have a good chef, then in the hotel the quality of the food will be definitely better. In this case, the cost will be the same on average.

    Try these places:

Black Anchor Restaurant. You can choose between European and Maldivian food cooked perfectly. The menu includes reef fish, chicken breast, Caesar salad, summertime salad, tuna steak, pasta with chicken and mushrooms.

Sun Sky Restaurant. Cuisines Italian, Indian, European, Asian, Malaysian. This place doesn’t look very cozy at the first sight but the more you interact with pleasant staff the more you want to stay here.

Seli Poeli Cafe & Restaurant. The restaurant has great food, natural fruit juice, nicely cooked fish (but can be overcooked. The service is good, but the waiting time for the food is too long.

Maracuya. The food here is nothing special, it is the same as in other budget places on the island, but the passion fruit fresh is the best!

Food Land Restaurant & Bakery. The only place on the island, where you can try a home bakery.

Thoddoo Cafe. Not for tourists, if you want to try true Maldivian cuisines – this is a perfect place.

Giardino. Cheap place with basic maldivian and western food.

At local stores, you can buy fruits, juices, drinks, groceries, and other necessary stuff.

    locals

If you look at Thoddoo on Google Maps, you will see that some hotels are located closer to the beach – Ari Heaven Thoddoo, Thila Farm View, and Summer Stay Thoddoo than others. In fact, they are not located there, but in the village. Local laws do not allow building hotels only in a certain area located in the village.

    Why is that?

Unlike many local islands, where tourism is developed, Thoddoo is a bit different. Many people on the island are farming and sell their products both to resorts and to the capital. Therefore, they do not want to give their land for the construction of another hotel.

    Where to stay on Thoddoo?

For the last 4 years, I’ve had an exclusive partnership (the best prices for accommodation and excursions) with Thoddoo Beach Holiday Inn. This is one of the first hotels on Thoddoo, and during this time they are constantly improving their reputation.

In addition to excellent service, Thoddoo Beach Holiday Inn is for both adults and families only.

The hotel has 2 blocks: a 3-floors building with a balcony and a one-floors block with a lounge area. Free water, tea, coffee, a snorkeling kit, and towels are provided.

Relax Residence is not the cheapest hotel on Thoddoo, but the quality of service provided is worth it.
